Mo's Universe launches Young Mo's Being gAy to raise money for Hillcrest Youth Center

SAN DIEGO -- To benefit the important organizations, charities and groups that serve San Diego’s LGBT community, the Mo’s Universe family of restaurants has created Young Mo’s Being gAy (YMBA), a new employee-giving program.

The goal of employees of Mo’s Universe-branded restaurants – Urban Mo’s, Baja Betty’s, Gossip Grill and Hillcrest Brewing Company – is to raise $20,000 in the first year of the program for the Hillcrest Youth Center (HYC), which has been selected as the inaugural beneficiary.

Hillcrest Brewing Company creates limited-edition gingerbread beer for holidays

SAN DIEGO -- The holidays wouldn't be complete without gingerbread ... in a bottle!

The world's first LGBT brewery, Hillcrest Brewing Company (HBC), will be releasing a limited edition Gingerbread Beer this holiday season, and its creators hope you get a chance to try it.

The beer is so limited, in fact, that only 75 bottles have been made so those interested in trying it are encouraged to head to HBC as soon as possible to put their name on the reservation list. Those who place their orders now will be able to pick up their bottle starting on Wednesday, Dec. 19.

Youth Empowerment Summit set for Oct. 6

SAN DIEGO -- Inspired by their own personal stories of growing up, local community members have been working hard to present the region’s first LGBTQ Youth Empowerment Summit, Y.E.S. San Diego. Scheduled for Oct. 6, organizers are bringing together numerous leaders from the LGBT community for the one-day conference, aimed at providing a place for LGBT youth 13 – 18 years old to break down some of life’s barriers.

SDPIX celebrates 10 years!

SAN DIEGO – In today’s economy, it is often difficult for small-business owners to stay afloat for more than a few years. Some, though, have worked their way through the economic challenges and only grow and thrive.

Such is the case with Hale Media, the parent company of San Diego Pix (SDPIX) and San Diego Gay & Lesbian News (SDGLN), which will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of its SDPIX brand this Saturday night with a party at “Laser Party” at Rich’s nightclub.

Planning begins for 5th annual San Diego Remembers Matthew Shepard event

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Remembers is gearing up to plan its fifth annual remembrance of Matthew Shepard, the young gay man who was killed in 1998 because he was gay.

The group began organizing the yearly march and vigil in 2008 to mark the 10th anniversary of Shepard's death out of concern that the horrendous crime was slipping from the public's memory. Organizers hope that by remembering Shepard and others who have been victim of hate violence, community members will be inspired to get involved with organizations and initiatives to stand up against hate.

San Diego Remembers to host vigil in response to Texas shooting of young lesbian couple

SAN DIEGO -- In response to the shooting of two young lesbians in Portland, Texas last weekend, San Diego Remembers will host a brief vigil at the site of the John Wear Hate Crimes Memorial Plaque in Hillcrest on Tuesday, July 3, at 8 pm.

Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Kristene Chapa, 18 were found Saturday in a nature area knee-deep in grass, and are believed to have been shot nine hours earlier. The shooting claimed the life of Olgin, and Chapa remains in serious but stable condition following emergency surgery.

Pool party season is upon us, and there's no better sign of this than the first Guys Like Us (GLU) Pool Party of 2012, coming up July 14 at a private estate in Mission Hills.

These GLU parties have traditionally been some of the best and most eagerly anticipated pool parties locally. You can view photos from some of the previous events here. Fundraisers for their AIDS Walk team, the GLU has raised thousands of dollars for the cause over the years.

BREAKING NEWS: Planning commission rejects Hillcrest Pride Flag project, but City Council to make final decision

SAN DIEGO – The City of San Diego’s Planning Commission today voted 4-2 to not recommend the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) application to install a 65-foot Pride flagpole at the intersection of Normal Street and University Avenue, but the project could still obtain the approval of the City Council.

The proposal calls for a rainbow flag to fly year-round on the flagpole, which is in the heart of the gayborhood and near The Center.
