Gareth Thomas on gay athletes, Mickey Rourke and coming out

When hunky Welsh rugby player Gareth Thomas came out at the height of his sports career, he became one of the very few openly gay active professional athletes in the world.

Since his retirement from his sport last fall, Thomas was voted the most influential gay person in the UK, receiving Stonewall’s hero of the year award in 2010, and proved his credentials as a positive role model during his time in the Celebrity Big Brother house earlier this year.

His inspirational story is now being made into a feature film with Oscar nominee Mickey Rourke as star.

Sydney beats San Francisco to win gay rugby world championship

MANCHESTER, England -- Gay Australian rugby team the Sydney Convicts have taken home the 2012 Bingham Cup, becoming gay rugby champions of the world.

They beat the San Francisco Fog 22 to 5 to win the accolade in Manchester this weekend.

The three-day tournament, which took place in Manchester, saw 37 teams from 12 countries compete.

Named in honour of Mark Bingham, a gay rugby player who died on United Flight 93 in September 11, the biennial tournament sees teams from cities rather than countries take part.

Gay sports figures in the UK to carry Olympic torch

UNITED KINGDOM -- 7,300 torch-bearers were named this morning and will carry the flame for 70 days and 8,000 through the UK in July ahead of the opening of the Olympics on 27 July.

Chris Basiurski, Chair of the Gay Football Supporters’ Network said of being nominated: “I am delighted and humbled at being chosen to carry the Olympic flame. For many years LGBT footballers have been on the fringes of society and at the GFSN we have worked hard to send out the message that football is for all regardless of sexual orientation.

Rugby star Sacha Harding has bared all for a photo shoot for the U.K. magazine Gay Times to support Elton John’s AIDS foundation.

"AIDS is such a devastating disease for so many people around the world and I was honored to get this opportunity to try and do my part to help raise awareness of the disease and ultimately save lives," Harding says.

Last year Harding, who plays with Bedford Blues, was also voted "Britain’s manliest man" after winning a nationwide competition organized by men’s grooming brand The Bluebeards Revenge.

Lesbian rugby player from Uganda receives asylum in Germany

The former head of Uganda's female rugby team - who is a lesbian - has been granted asylum in Germany.

The move comes after she faced harrassment from sports officials in her homeland after her sexuality became public knowledge.

Lilian Ikulmet, who captained the She Cranes team, told DW News that she had been raped, beaten and discriminated against by men for her sexuality.

Ben Cohen to "beef up" Dallas Pride this weekend

Growing up in the cool climes of the north of England, "the closest I have gotten to Dallas is the TV program," he laughs. So the thought of being in the famous Texas heat frightens him a bit.
