COMMENTARY: The Supreme Court, Prop 8, DOMA and the gun-toting "Christians"

My partner Susan asked me this morning what I thought about the U.S. Supreme Court hearing the DOMA and Prop 8 cases. I just shrugged and said: “I’ll wait until they rule.”

For me to even say anything about what I believe will happen would just be pure speculation. Who even knows what lies in the minds of these Supreme Court justices? It is, after all, the Supreme Court and we all know that in some cases they aren’t doling out any sort of justice.

Supreme Court takes no action today on remaining gay-rights cases

WASHINGTON -- - The U.S. Supreme Court issued no new orders today in the remaining LGBT rights cases on its docket in the wake of its decision Friday to review the Proposition 8 challenge and one of four cases challenging the constitutionality of the federal so-called Defense of Marriage Act.

Two Lambda Legal cases remain on the docket: Brewer v. Diaz and U.S. Office of Personnel Management v Golinski.

Gay weddings start in Washington state

SEATTLE – Gay and lesbian couples flocked to city halls and courthouses on Sunday to get married, as Washington state celebrated its first day of marriage equality.

In Seattle, Mayor Mike McGinn was all smiles, welcoming couples to City Hall and congratulating newlyweds. “It’s a great day, a joyous day,” he said.

Strangers who wanted to be part of the historical moment handed out flowers to the newlyweds and shouted out their congratulations.

People showered the steep steps of City Hall with rose petals and rice in celebration.

Minnesota governor: I would sign marriage-equality bill

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Gov. Mark Dayton said this week that he would sign a marriage-equality bill into law should one ever hit his desk.

Minnesotans last month rejected Proposition 32, which would have added a state constitutional ban against same-sex marriage.

Dayton told Minnesota Public Radio that is was not sure whether the state Legislature would take up the issue.
