Dramatic increase in HIV infection rates among gay men, youth

New data from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveal a sharp increase in the number of new HIV infections among gay and bisexual men and, in particular, among young men ages 13-24.

The new data includes statistics from 2010 and trends from prior years dating back to 2007.

In 2010, the CDC tracked 47,500 new HIV infections across the country. Infection rates among young gay and bisexual men ages 13-24 increased 22 percent over 2008 infection rates.

"The Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) board of directors recently voted to conclude its work on Hillcrest Mardi Gras. Hillcrest Mardi Gras has been a collaborative event produced by many volunteers and community groups. The HBA and the Greater San Diego Business Association Foundation (GSDBAF) have been two of the prominent players in producing this event. By stepping out of this event the HBA also is stepping away from the many disputes that have surrounded the event.

Today, Dec. 19, 2012, Russian LGBT activists in different cities took to the streets protesting against a new amendment (article 6.13.1) to the Administrative Offences Code of the Russian Federation which creates administrative responsibility for so called 'propaganda of homosexualism." The protests were took place despite the fact that the State Duma moved the first reading of draft law at the very last moment to Jan. 22, 2013.

San Diegans to host vigil for Newtown, Conn.

SAN DIEGO -- A coalition of local organizations is organizing the "Light a Tree for Newton, CT Community" vigil to be held at 5:30 pm Thursday, Dec. 20.

Community members are invited to attend the event, which will include a tree-lighting ceremony and speakers.

Organizers have set up 26 Christmas trees - 20 miniature trees and six large trees to represent the child and adult victims of last Friday's shooting rampage.

HELENA, Mont. -- The Helena, Mont., City Commission on Monday voted unanimously to approve an ordinance to prohibit discrimination in housing, employment and many kinds of public accommodation based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Hundreds of the city's residents and other concerned parties turned out to support or oppose the measure, which led the Commission to open two additional rooms to provide audio and video of the meeting.
