North County LGBTQ Resource Center's Max Disposti honored by local NAACP

SAN DIEGO -- North County LGBTQ Resource Center Executive Director Max Disposti was awarded the Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Award by the North San Diego County NAACP at a ceremony held Monday, Jan. 21. The award acknowledges outstanding civic leaders in the community, and is handed out at the NAACP’s annual community prayer breakfast.

GLBT Historic Task Force leads campaign for local AIDS memorial

SAN DIEGO -- After leading last year’s successful “Harvey Milk Street” campaign, the San Diego GLBT Historic Task Force will now focus on creating a San Diego AIDS memorial, in part to honor over 7,600 AIDS-related deaths in San Diego County.

Anti-gay hate group announces march in Washington to support Prop 8

WASHINGTON – The anti-gay hate group National Organization for Marriage is planning a march in Washington on the very day that the U.S. Supreme Court takes up California’s Proposition 8 case.

NOM’s “Marriage March 2013” is planned for Tuesday, March 26, but to date the details are sketchy. The “Marriage March 2013” Facebook page, set up on Jan. 22, has 68 likes.

On March 26, the U.S. Supreme Court will review the Prop 8 case, Hollingsworth v. Perry.

I have two dominant memories of my fellow San Diegan, Eric Isaacson, who will receive an award from the St. Paul’s Foundation on Valentine’s Day for his tireless volunteer work to “Legalize Love for Everyone.”

The first memory is of Eric standing on the steps of our local courthouse and holding a large banner in front of an angry crowd of fellow protestors who had just been robbed of marriage equality in California. He stood for over an hour, silent, jaw locked like sentry outside our most important Hall of Justice.

OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- The North County LGBTQ Resource Center invites community members to a town hall meeting tonight at 6:30 pm.

As the center has been open for just over a year, the center's staff and board will present a number of issues to community members who are interested in their work:

- Review what has happened in 2012;

- Look at our Finances and see how we support the center;

- Look to the future;

- Hear about new open board positions;

How homophobic is Russia? Only one Duma deputy votes against anti-gay bill

MOSCOW – The Russian State Duma voted overwhelmingly today in favor of a homophobic bill that would prevent the “propaganda of homosexualism,” the Russian LGBT Network posted on its Facebook page.

This first reading of the bill got only one vote against passage, while one deputy abstained and 52 deputies did not vote. A total of 388 deputies voted for the bill that would discriminate against LGBT Russians.
