Myrtle Cole claims victory in District 4 City Council race

Midway through Myrtle Cole’s speech at a union hall Tuesday night, a supporter stood up behind her holding up signs with photos of Cole and San Diego Mayor Bob Filner.

When Cole turned to see the photos, another supporter announced the latest vote tally had given her an insurmountable lead in the District 4 City Council race.

Trevor Hero Award to be given to Cindy McCain

NEW YORK -- The Trevor Project will honor philanthropist Cindy McCain with the Trevor Hero Award at TrevorLIVE New York at Chelsea Piers for her ongoing support of the LGBT community.

Nevada’s hate crimes protections now include transgender community

CARSON CITY, Nev. -- Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval on Tuesday signed into law SB 139, legislation adding gender identity and expression to the state's hate crimes law.

Under the new law, transgender Nevadans will have the same protections against hate crimes as all other vulnerable communities. Under the leadership of Senators Pat Spearman and David Parks, the bill passed the state Senate with all but one senator voting in favor and 30-11 in the state Assembly.

Gay rights supporters mourn exclusion of LGBT binational couples from immigration reform

WASHINGTON – Gay rights supporters and their allies expressed bitter disappointment that LGBT binational couples are being excluded from immigration reform.

Bowing to enormous pressure from Republicans who threatened to derail the entire bill, Democrats reluctantly withdrew an amendment that would have added LGBT binational couples to the much-needed overhaul of the nation’s immigration laws.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) had repeatedly warned Democrats against added LGBT protections to the immigration reform bill and vowed to pull his support for the proposed bill.

Long Beach opens park in honor of Harvey Milk

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- City leaders opened a park this morning in Long Beach's downtown area named after gay rights leader Harvey Milk.

A grand opening celebration was held at the park, located at Third Street and The Promenade.

Ground was broken on the park a year ago, which also includes an "Equality Plaza" area commemorating Milk and local gay leaders.
