THEATER REVIEW: “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”

I was (and am) a pretty good speller, but I never won any spelling bees. Neither will most of the contestants in “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” the musical that pokes gentle fun at that great old grammar-school institution.

“Spelling Bee,” running through June 8 at OnStage Playhouse, is a paean to being different, full of recognizable types. The kids who couldn’t spell would call them “losers” because, let’s face it, they are not like the others.

Network axes fall hard on gay characters

It's been a rough end to what started out as a record-breaking season for openly gay characters on the small screen.

Spotlight on Ultra Naté: Worshiping the hero within

Twenty years after exploding onto international dance floors, Ultra Naté remains steadfast in the ebb and flow of change, proving that the artist's longevity is alive and well. In her two decades of making music, Ultra Naté has remained a musical chameleon and an icon of the LGBT community and beyond. Ultra embraces a variety of sounds, from R&B, hip-hop, soul and disco to house, rock and electro-pop. I recently sat down with her to discuss, among other things, her 20-plus-years in the business.

The high cost of same-sex divorce

NEW YORK -- A patchwork of state marriage laws and the federal Defense of Marriage Act has made the process of unraveling a relationship extremely difficult -- and expensive.

A same-sex couple who marries in one state and later relocates to a state that doesn't recognize the marriage, for example, may be unable to get a traditional divorce. Often, they either have to move to the state where they married to establish residency or dissolve the marriage outside of the court system. Some states call this a dissolution of marriage instead of a divorce.
