Weekend challenge: 5 conversations at worship on lifting the Boy Scouts ban

Next week, 1400 members of the Boy Scouts' National Council will converge in Dallas for the organization's vote to decide whether or not to end the Scouts' ban on gay youth. GLAAD will be providing a variety of actions you can take to make a real difference on this issue leading up to the vote.

As 100 countries celebrate IDAHOT today, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is calling for greater education to reduce the stigma and discrimination experienced by almost 50 million people living in countries (from a total 1.5 billion) where it is still illegal to be LGBT.

In his speech given in the Netherlands in the presence of the Dutch royalty, the Secretary General underlined that “For generations, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in all regions have been subjected to terrible violence on account of their sexual orientation and gender identity.”

“Interior. Leather Bar.” is probably the most controversial film at FilmOut San Diego’s 15th annual LGBT Film Festival, and is making its California premiere on June 1 at the Birch. It was a hit at the Sundance Film Festival.

FilmOut tickets are expected to be scarce since the local leather community, FetishMenSanDiego, are co-presenters of the movie and are expected to turn out in force.

Third annual Amazing High Heel Race to step off June 15 in Hillcrest

SAN DIEGO -- Girl, break in those heels! The Amazing High Heel Race is coming back into Hillcrest for it's third annual appearance on Saturday, June 15.

High-heel clad individuals will race through Hillcrest during the scavenger-hunt type event to raise funds for the continued maintenance of the Hillcrest Pride Flag.

During the race, teams will complete a numbers of "tasks" - which will be "mostly" PG-13 rated - that will take them on a journey throughout the neighborhood. At the conclusion of the race, participants will gather at Gossip Grill for an awards celebration and party.

San Diego County meets national air quality standard for smog

SAN DIEGO – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that San Diego County has met the 1997 national health-based air quality standard for smog, also known as ground-level ozone.

In addition, EPA has approved the state’s plan to maintain clean air standards for the more than three million residents of the San Diego area.

Equality California to honor Vincent Pompei at San Diego ceremony

SAN DIEGO -- Vincent Pompei has been named the State Farm Good Neighbor Award honoree for the San Diego Equality Awards on June 1, presented by Equality California.

Pompei is the project director for the Center for Excellence in School Counseling and Leadership, and the chair for the only national educator conference focused on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer youth. He is currently a full time doctoral candidate at San Diego State University and is a former middle school and high school teacher.

Queen Mary goes rainbow in May to celebrate Long Beach Pride, hosts Poseidon Dance Party

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The historic ocean liner the Queen Mary, anchored in Long Beach Harbor as a historical museum, is illuminating the night sky with rainbow-colored lights from bow to stern to show solidarity with the LGBT community.

Specifically, the Queen Mary is saluting Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride celebration, which will be held this weekend of May 19 and 19.

SDSU students and staff discuss group's name change to Queer Student Union

SAN DIEGO – A student group at San Diego State University is changing its name to be more inclusive, but the new name is raising eyebrows.

Members of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Student Union at San Diego State University are dropping the LGBTSU acronym and now going by the Queer Student Union.

“We’re here and next year, we’re queer,” junior and president-elect Thomas Negron said.

A move to be more inclusive, President Michael Manacop and Negron said “queer” is the easiest way to encompass all of the gender and sexual identities on campus without getting too wordy.

Internet safety initiative launched for LGBT community

WASHINGTON — The LGBT Technology Partnership, a nonpartisan, non-profit organization focused on ensuring that the implementation of public policies address the unique technological needs of LGBT communities, today announced a new collaboration with the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) beginning with the joint launch of a series of cybersecurity tips to encourage greater awareness about cybersecurity and safety issues affecting the LGBT community.
