North Park Festival of the Arts returns Saturday

SAN DIEGO -- The community is set to descend on North Park May 18 for the 17th annual North Park Festival of the Arts, featuring art for adults and children, live bands and dance performances, and the return of the Craft Brew Block, with beer and ale from a wide selection of local breweries. The yearly festival is organized by the North Park Main Street, and runs from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.

EU LGBT survey: Poll on homophobia sparks concern

A quarter of gay people surveyed in a major EU poll say they have been subjected to attacks or violent threats in the past five years.

Poorer and younger respondents were more likely to face discrimination due to their sexuality, the survey found.

Some 93,000 people in the EU and Croatia were polled in the EU's first survey on this scale.

Gay rights campaigners welcomed the report but called for stronger legal action by Brussels to tackle the issue.

In his speech given in the Netherlands in the presence of the Dutch royalty, the Secretary General underlined that “For generations, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in all regions have been subjected to terrible violence on account of their sexual orientation and gender identity.”

Third annual Amazing High Heel Race to step off June 15 in Hillcrest

SAN DIEGO -- Girl, break in those heels! The Amazing High Heel Race is coming back into Hillcrest for it's third annual appearance on Saturday, June 15.

High-heel clad individuals will race through Hillcrest during the scavenger-hunt type event to raise funds for the continued maintenance of the Hillcrest Pride Flag.

During the race, teams will complete a numbers of "tasks" - which will be "mostly" PG-13 rated - that will take them on a journey throughout the neighborhood. At the conclusion of the race, participants will gather at Gossip Grill for an awards celebration and party.

San Diego County meets national air quality standard for smog

SAN DIEGO – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that San Diego County has met the 1997 national health-based air quality standard for smog, also known as ground-level ozone.

In addition, EPA has approved the state’s plan to maintain clean air standards for the more than three million residents of the San Diego area.

Equality California to honor Vincent Pompei at San Diego ceremony

SAN DIEGO -- Vincent Pompei has been named the State Farm Good Neighbor Award honoree for the San Diego Equality Awards on June 1, presented by Equality California.

Pompei is the project director for the Center for Excellence in School Counseling and Leadership, and the chair for the only national educator conference focused on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer youth. He is currently a full time doctoral candidate at San Diego State University and is a former middle school and high school teacher.
