Food, art and a hipster vibe in San Diego's North Park

It's edgy, it's cool — and it's official: San Diego's North Park made Forbes' list of America's Hippest Hipster Neighborhoods in September, joining such spots as L.A.'s Silver Lake and San Francisco's Mission District.

North Park has all the ingredients for the cool school: It's culturally diverse and has art galleries, boutiques, trendy bars with handcrafted cocktails and local brews, and foodie-approved eateries.

If you're hip to this scene, check it out.

ADOPT ME! Barry is adorable!

Barry is a short-haired black cat. He is 2 years old and has been neutered.

Why I'd make a great companion

I'm a mellow and easy-going companion, content just to feel loved. I like to take my time approaching new situations. While I am a bit shy with new faces and places, I warm up as I become more familiar with my environment.

Type of home I'm looking for

Because I am shy, I will do best in a home without young children.

THEATER REVIEW: Culture and class clash in “Educating Rita”

Can a wide-eyed seeker of truth and knowledge preserve her passion for learning despite the efforts of a beaten-down purveyor of public education who fears that British college classes are more likely to stultify than inspire?

That’s the question at hand in Willy Russell’s “Educating Rita,” playing through Feb. 3 at North Coast Repertory Theatre and directed by Rosina Reynolds.

COMMENTARY: It’s not about the guns

Is it really about the guns? Are people really pissed about the possibility of new gun laws in our country – or are they pissed that it’s a black man standing up and saying we need to get real about gun laws and regulations, and background checks.

I only ask this question because of what I witnessed on Friday while shopping for a few groceries. I grocery shop at our local Marine Base Commissary, so all of the patrons are active duty, retired or National Guard service members.

Bluestocking Books hosts multicultural LGBT book club in Hillcrest

SAN DIEGO -- Recognizing a need to represent the diverse voices in the LGBT community, Caleb Rainey started a multicultural book group held twice monthly at Bluestocking Books in Hillcrest. The group was created in part from Rainey’s thought that “literature can open up conversations,” he said.

SAN FRANCISCO – Supervisor David Campos plans to introduce legislation today that would ask San Francisco voters in November to rename its airport after assassinated gay-rights leader Harvey Milk.

The charter amendment, which appears to have the support of a majority of the supervisors, would change the name to Harvey Milk-San Francisco International Airport.

John O’Connor, executive director of Equality California, hailed the effort in a letter to supporters:
