San Diego County Tax Collector Dan McAllister to speak to Hillcrest Town Council

SAN DIEGO -- The county's top tax man will make a stop at this month's Hillcrest Town Council (HTC) meeting, taking place Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 6:30 pm.

All interested community members are invited to the meeting, which will feature a presentation by San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister, who will also take questions from attendees.

The meeting will also include updates from representatives of other local government offices who will be in attendance to take questions and feedback.

Colorado Senate passes civil-unions bill

DENVER, Colo. -- The Democrat-controlled state Senate voted 21-14 today to approve a civil-unions bill.

Senate Bill 11 will allow gay and lesbian couples to form civil unions.

SB 11 now goes to the Democrat-controlled House, where it is expected to pass.

Gov. John Hickenlooper, a Democrat, has pushed for civil unions. If all goes as expected, the governor will sign the bill in March and the law will go into effect on May 31.

Colorado would be the ninth state to have civil unions or a similar law.










Students, parents want to hold "traditional prom" without gays

SULLIVAN, Ind. — A group of high school students and parents rallied Sunday at a local church in Sullivan, Ind., calling for a “traditional” high school prom that bans gay students from attending.

Officials at Sullivan High School say there’s nothing they can do legally to prevent gay students from attending the school prom, and that has prompted students and parents to take matters into their own hands, reported WTWO-TV.

Charlie Morgan, a Chief Warrant Officer of the New Hampshire National Guard and a plaintiff in a lawsuit challenging the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), died Sunday after a long battle with breast cancer, according to a statement by OutServe-SLDN.

Pentagon extends new protections for gay military families harmed by DOMA

WASHINGTON – Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta announced today that same-sex spouses of active members of the military will begin receiving protections that were previously denied to them, including the issuance of military identification cards, access to family support initiatives, and joint duty assignments.

The Secretary noted that the Pentagon was doing what it could, within the constraints imposed by the discriminatory so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry, said the Pentagon took a step in the right direction.

South Bay Pride celebration to return this year

CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- South Bay Alliance members are setting the wheels in motion for the return of the South Bay Pride Art and Music Festival, set to take place Sept. 14 in Chula Vista, Calif. After the cancelation of last year’s Pride, board chair Dae Elliott said the organization was looking to come back “bigger and better,” with eyes focused on the future.

“The idea is to come out with a much bigger bang,” Elliott said. “The goal this year is to really push hard to make it substantially bigger.”
