Suspects sought in anti-gay attack at UCLA

WESTWOOD, Calif. — UCLA campus police have released a sketch of one man they say was involved in an anti-gay hate crime against a student.

It happened around 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 18 as the male student was walking south in the 400 block of Gayley Avenue, near Veteran Avenue.

According to UCLA police, two men got out of a dark-colored, four-door sedan and approached the victim.

One of the men threatened the victim with a knife and made anti-gay slurs. The two suspects then fled in the vehicle heading south on Gayley.

The student suffered scratches and bruises, but declined treatment.

NEW YORK – Internationally known gay porn star Arpad Miklos was found dead in his apartment on Sunday, according to several online sources. He was 45.

Born on Sept. 11, 1967 in Hungary, the former chemist born Peter Kozma was discovered by the Kristen Bjorn porn studio in 1995. He moved to the U.S. shortly after that, putting together a successful career in gay porn for about 15 years. He made almost 60 films.

BREAKING NEWS: House of Commons votes on marriage-equality bill

LONDON – The House of Commons, the lower branch of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, conducted a lengthy debate on marriage equality in a historic gathering today in Britain’s hallowed hall of government.

This was the second of three readings of the Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Bill. The House debated the whole principle of the bill, and the usual arguments for and against marriage equality were brought up.

After hours of debate, the House of Commons voted 400-175 to approve the marriage bill.

San Diego Hospice files for bankruptcy

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Hospice has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, according to a statement from the organization's CEO.

"Our decision to take this course follows many months of financial and other challenges," said Kathleen Pacurar, CEO of the troubled non-profit.

The end-of-life care service, which faces growing medical costs and a federal audit, announced it will continue operations while it reorganizes assets and "explores" structural options. This will take up to 90 days, Pacurar said.

Things might soon be looking up for the lesbian brides-to-be who were denied a wedding cake by an Oregon bakery.

In the wake of the incident, Baltimore-based pastry chef and "Ace of Cakes" star Duff Goldman is sending out an open offer to the couple, saying he'll bake and transport their wedding cake completely free of charge.

Hillcrest Town Council to host neighborhood cleanup on Saturday

SAN DIEGO -- The Hillcrest Clean T.E.A.M. will host its next neighborhood cleanup on Saturday, Feb. 9 - just in time for Valentine's Day.

The "I Love Hillcrest Valentine's Cleanup" will go from 9 am to noon, and volunteers should meet just south of Park Blvd. and University Ave. at 8:45 am to break up into groups.

Volunteers will sweep sidewalks and pick-up debris throughout the heaviest trafficked parts of the neighborhood.

"You never know who may show up to push a broom with you - and it's great exercise," wrote event organizers in an e-mail.

San Diego works to clear the way for curbside cafes

SAN DIEGO -- In an effort to make it easier for San Diego restaurants to create sidewalk cafes, some members of the San Diego City Council joined with the San Diego Chapter of the California Restaurant Association (CRA) to pledge to reform the costly, prohibitive regulations that make doing business difficult for local restaurants.

Councilmembers Lorie Zapf and Kevin Faulconer, along with Council President Todd Gloria announced their plans at an event Thursday outside of the OB Noodle House restaurant.

Women and girls in sports to be celebrated

SAN DIEGO -- National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) will be observed on Wednesday, Feb. 6, to focus on the accomplishments of women athletes and the increasing number of women involved in athletics since the passage of Title IX, the federal regulation that increased revenues for women’s sports in schools.

Co-sponsored by a number of women’s organizations, this year's NGWSD will mark the 41st anniversary of Title IX and women have come a long way in sports during the past four decades.
