THEATER REVIEW: “Ruthless! The Musical” kicks off Coronado Playhouse’s 66th season

What would you be willing to do to get a starring role?

If you’re 8-going-on-18 dynamo Tina Denmark (Chase Anichini), the answer is anything, anything at all, to play the lead in the school play – “Pippi (Longstocking) in Tahiti,” written and directed by Tina’s third-grade teacher Miss Thorn (Andrekka J. Lanier).

Hold onto your hat. It’s “Ruthless! The Musical,” and it’s getting a hoot of a production (thanks in part to Chrissy Burns’ sprightly direction) through March 3 at Coronado Playhouse.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: What about those who were out, loud and proud?

(Editor’s note: In her weekly opinion piece on SDGLN’s Commentary page, Contributor Barb Hamp Weicksel wrote about this topic: ”The out, loud and proud myth of the gay community” in which she argues that times have changed for the LGBT movement and that some people now live by example instead of by confrontation. Needless to say, not everyone agrees with her point of view.)

“We had a long conversation about the quality and what it represents. When I went there people were smiling, happy and having a good time,” Remy said. “I felt it was a good business venture. I ran it by Jaque and we decided we wanted to be part of the franchise system.”

Helping the "unbanked" get affordable financial services

According to a recent survey by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and the U.S. Census Bureau, 17 million American adults now live in “unbanked” households, while another 51 million are considered “underbanked.”

In other words, over 28 percent of households either have no traditional checking or savings accounts (unbanked); or their basic financial needs aren’t being met by their bank or credit union so they also rely on alternative lenders like check-cashing services or payday loans (underbanked).

COMMENTARY: Who’s been hit with the stupid stick?

It’s been so, so stupid in political La-La Land of late. Bad stupid! One might have thought we’d enjoy a reprieve after the presidential elections. But, no. And there’s just so much stupidity one can tolerate. I’m at capacity. Maybe worse. Beyond the point of satiety, my dear, darling father might have said. When he was above ground, routinely forming complex sentences with multisyllabic words. And gently chuckling at the world’s idiots.

But I’m not laughing. That’s for sure. Not that I haven’t tried.
