Downtown San Diego Partnership reaches out to plan for future growth

SAN DIEGO -- To some, Downtown San Diego is a treasure to explore; to others it is a tangle of cars and crowds. Either way, Downtown possesses some of the city’s finest resources for residents, visitors and employees. The Downtown San Diego Partnership and San Diego Foundation co-hosted a town hall meeting in Uptown to discuss how to develop and integrate Downtown resources.

Plans for West Hollywood "entertainment shuttle" move forward

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - The West Hollywood City Council furthered plans Monday for a weekend entertainment shuttle on Santa Monica Boulevard.

Council members voted 4-0, with Mayor Pro Tempore John D'Amico abstaining, to pay Symblaze Inc. $17,000 to brand and market the pilot program.

The council also opened the bidding process for shuttle service providers with the goal of starting the program in July, according to a city staff report.

North Park Community Association elects new board members

SAN DIEGO -- The North Park Community Association (NCPA) elected officers and were updated on a number of important neighborhood issues, including battling graffiti, a citizens law enforcement patrol and this year’s Bird Park Summer Concert Series at its annual board meeting, held April 24 at Queen Bee’s Art & Cultural Center, 3925 Ohio St.

The Center launches Project TRANS, a transgender services program

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego LGBT Community Center has launched Project TRANS, its transgender services program.

Project TRANS (Transgender Referrals, Assistance, Networking and Services) will serve as an umbrella for the various services The Center has previously offered specifically to the transgender community, including discussion groups, behavioral health services, HIV prevention services, youth services and more.

SDGLN Poll: Readers give their opinion on use of the word, "queer"

SAN DIEGO – Readers of San Diego Gay & Lesbian News who took our poll are evenly split over whether the LGBT community should “own” the word “queer.”

Our poll question was: The LGBT community increasingly embraces the word "queer." What do you think? Why not just own the word? Why go down that road? Or not sure.

The results, which are not scientific, reveal that 46% of readers believe that the LGBT community should own the word, 46% don’t want to go down that road and 9% are not sure.

Has hooking up become boring?

While everybody is talking about hooking up, no one is exactly sure what it means. Here are some characteristics I discovered:

• Almost any sexual act. A hookup can range from a make-out session to full out sex;

• Sexual activity outside the context of a romantic relationship;

• No commitment involved. If you hook up, the other person might have no expectations of hooking up with you again.
