The Center's Young Professionals Council to host Election Night Party

SAN DIEGO -- As people await the results of many local, state, and national election races, the Young Professionals Council of the San Diego LGBT Community Center will gather tonight starting at 7 pm at East Village Tavern+Bowl for an Election Night Party.

Community members are invited to join other young LGBT professionals and allies at the event, which will take place in the mezzanine area of the popular downtown bar and bowling alley. Attendees will be able to order from the full food and drink menu.

The Center to celebrate 39 years at black-tie gala Saturday

SAN DIEGO – It’s not often that San Diego’s LGBT community dons tuxedos, gowns and other formal wear in support of a charitable cause. The San Diego LGBT Community Center’s annual gala – taking place this Saturday, Oct. 6 – is one exception as supporters of the organization’s work will come together for a glamorous evening of food, drinks, dancing, celebration and charity.

SDG&E donates $7,500 to Hillcrest Youth Center

SAN DIEGO -- SDG&E has donated $7,500 to support of youth leadership development at Hillcrest Youth Center, The San Diego LGBT Community Center said today.

"We are tremendously fortunate to have SDG&E’s support for The Center’s Hillcrest Youth Center," said Christopher Mills, director of major gifts. "Hillcrest Youth Center fills a critical need for LGBTQ youth throughout San Diego County thanks to amazing corporate sponsors like SDG&E. Generous grants like this one help make our work possible, and we are greatly appreciative of their support."

Panelists discuss "pride" at Diversionary Theatre pre-show event

SAN DIEGO -- Diversionary Theater hosted two special evenings to launch their latest production, “The Pride,” including an opening night party on April 7 and a panel discussion the following week on Friday, April 13. Alexi Kaye Campbell’s play includes a look at elements of LGBT pride in two time periods: the late 1950s and present day. Directed by Glenn Paris, the play stars Francis Gercke, Jessica John, Brian Mackey and Dangerfield Moore.

Hailing from New York, New York, Anthony has brought a bit of East Coast flair to San Diego for the last twelve years ... and regularly enjoys eating at Hillcrest's City Deli. He is happily married to his partner, Gary Rader.

VIDEO: Community members to gather for Transgender Day of Empowerment

SAN DIEGO – Community members will gather tonight at The San Diego LGBT Community Center for the ninth Transgender Day of Empowerment, an event organized each year to celebrate the transgender community and its accomplishments.

The free event, which begins at 6 pm, will include a series of speakers, followed by community awards, entertainment and refreshments. This year’s celebration will explore “Then and Now,” taking a look at what it was like to be transgender 20 years ago, as opposed to someone who coming out today.

COMMUNITY PROFILE: Courtney Ware

Courtney Ware signed up to volunteer for San Diego Pride last summer, and fell in love with the community. Initially, her goal was to meet new people, but the 27-year old became so passionate about the fight for equality that she now finds herself involved with half a dozen community organizations.

Originally from Santa Clarita, California, Ware has been married to her husband Gary for nearly four years, although the couple has been together for 10 years.

San Diego mayoral candidates to speak to LGBT community Wednesday night at The Center

SAN DIEGO -- A coalition of organizations will host an LGBT Mayoral Candidate Forum on Wednesday, March 28, at The San Diego LGBT Community Center.

All four of the major candidates in the San Diego mayor's race -- Carl DeMaio, Bonnie Dumanis, Bob Filner and Nathan Fletcher -- are expected to participate in the forum.

The event will provide the candidates with an opportunity to discuss issues facing LGBT San Diegans and answer questions about their plans if elected to the office.

Two Hillcrest groups endorse Harvey Milk Street project

SAN DIEGO -- At their meetings last night, the Hillcrest Town Council (HTC) and Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) each gave their endorsements to the Committee to Commemorate Harvey Milk's proposal to rename a street in Hillcrest as Harvey Milk Street.

The residents group voted 24-3 in support of the project, which the committee will include in its application materials as the project goes through the City of San Diego's various approval and permitting processes.

COMMUNITY PROFILE: Brandon Tate-McWilliams

Brandon Tate-McWilliams is an up-and-coming leader in San Diego, who has immersed himself in the community since moving here six years ago.

The 27-year old from Baton Rouge, Louisiana came to San Diego to accept a job opportunity and hasn't looked back since!

Tate-McWilliams married his partner Kyle on August 7, 2011. The couple flew to New York to get their official marriage license, but then hosted a wedding reception with friends and family at the Top of the Park -- the same location they'd been in 2008 when they learned Proposition 8 had passed.
