SAN DIEGO -- City Councilmember Carl DeMaio talks about life after Election Day and what's the next step for San Diego.

DeMaio spoke Tuesday morning with San Diego 6 News about why he conceded the election to Bob Filner before the final ballots were counted and urges San Diegans to unite behind the new mayor.

Bob Filner elected mayor of San Diego

SAN DIEGO – Bob Filner won election as mayor of San Diego early today with 51% of the vote, according to preliminary results.

Carl DeMaio, whose election would have made history as the first gay Republican to take the reins of one of America’s largest cities, conceded the close race was over, during a news conference at 10 am today.

Surrounded by a group of teary-eyed supporters, DeMaio said at the conference that the city needs to begin the healing process after this tumultuous election.

CBS 8: Filner highlights plan to make San Diego more bike-friendly

SAN DIEGO -- Mayoral candidate Bob Filner took a bicycle tour around the city of San Diego Sunday to highlight efforts to make it more accessible to cyclists.

Filner started his trek in Little Italy and ended with a ride into Old Town state historic park.

He said it was important to him to see first-hand the issues bicyclists face, like potholes and uneven pavement. a

Last week, Filner's opponent, Carl Demaio, announced his own plan to improve conditions for San Diego's bicyclists.

Gay candidate slammed over water fight article

Consider the dilemma of a very left-of-center Democrat, positioned as a "progressive" running against a gay Republican for mayor in a city that has elected Republicans to that position.

He can't exactly verbally gay-bash or openly appeal to the anti-gay vote. But, retiring Congressman Bob Filner, running for San Diego mayor, found a unique way to remind the public that his opponent, Carl DeMaio, is gay.

The candidates are Carl DeMaio and Bonnie Dumanis, who are gay and lesbian, and Bob Filner and Nathan Fletcher, who are straight.
