THEATER REVIEW: “The Sound Of Music”

It’s old, long, even a little sappy – and it gets me every time.

I’m talking about Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The Sound Of Music,” now getting a splendid revival from San Diego Musical Theatre. Directed and choreographed by Todd Nielsen, the 1960 winner of five Tonys plays through May 26 at Birch North Park Theatre.

THEATER REVIEW: SDMT’s “Chicago” at Birch North Park Theater

Ah, the Roaring Twenties, when the Capone gang ruled Chicago, Prohibition brought speakeasies, and mouthy flappers in short hair and short skirts were in abundance.

Some of those women, taking advantage of the easy availability of hardware, wiped out their philandering (or simply annoying) spouses or boyfriends, landing in prison. Now they sing us their stories from the women’s cell block in the Cook County jail, under the watchful eye of Matron “Mama” Morton (Ria Carey).

THEATER REVIEW: “Footloose: The Musical” gets the toes tapping

Teenagers have lots of problems, but high schooler Ren McCormack (Anton Gero) really feels put upon. Ren’s dad has deserted the family and he and his mom Ethel (Debra Wanger) are forced to move from that toddlin’ town of Chicago all the way to the nowheresville that is Bomont, described as “a small Midwestern town” (it looks a lot like Texas).

Small isn’t the half of it. It’s also small-minded and super-religious, run by a town council whose most influential member is the stuffy Rev. Shaw Moore (Cris O’Bryon).

THEATER REVIEW: Go see "Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat"

Two early Andrew Lloyd Webber shows hit local stages this season: “Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.” For my money, these are also the best shows he’s ever written.

San Diego Musical Theatre is first out of the block with its colorful, jaunty and fun “Joseph,” playing through Oct. 9 at San Diego Repertory Theatre.

THEATER REVIEW: San Diego Musical Theatre hoofs it up with “A Chorus Line”

Those high-stepping wannabe Broadway hoofers are back, submitting in public to the humiliation of auditions and nosy questions in the hope of making it big – or at least making the rent – on the Great White Way.

San Diego Musical Theatre presents “A Chorus Line” though June 12 at the Lyceum Theatre in Horton Plaza.

Winner of nine Tonys and for a short time holder of the record for the longest-running musical on Broadway (it was replaced by “Cats,” whose record later fell to “Phantom of the Opera”), “A Chorus Line” takes us inside the audition process for a new Broadway show.
