The Year in Review: Gay, lesbian service members no longer in the closet

On Sept. 21, the U.S. military marked the first anniversary of the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and 2012 saw lesbian, gay and bisexual service members openly participating in proud military traditions, national events and LGBT pride celebrations.

Letter to the Community: Real LGBT leaders don’t put politics above Pride

“Are you ready?”

With those three words, my partner Carl DeMaio took my hand, squeezed it, and the two of us started down the parade route in this year’s San Diego Pride Parade.

I almost did not walk in the Pride Parade this year.

I want to share with you why – and why I am so glad I did.

First, let’s recall why Pride came to be.

The LGBT community was tired of living closeted lives and we developed Pride events to show that we were, indeed, proud of who we are.

LGBT troops make history in San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- Upwards of 200,000 people screamed and hollered thanks on Saturday when American troops for the first time in U.S. history were able to march in their uniform at a pride parade, right here in Hillcrest.

The history-making moment at the 2012 San Diego LGBT Pride Parade will be covered in full on Monday morning by San Diego Gay & Lesbian News, which does not publish on Sunday.

Send your comments about what you thought of the 2012 San Diego Pride events to SDGLN Editor in Chief Ken Williams at ken@sdgln.com.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Ahead of Pride Parade, homophobia rears its ugly head in Hillcrest

This weekend is Gay Pride in San Diego. I was (considering) not going to the festivities this year, thinking that it's going to be the "same old thing." However, Wednesday evening, my partner Patrick D. Riedling and I experienced a very disappointing situation that left me wondering ...

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Turning your back will accomplish nothing

I’ve been thinking quite a bit about Harvey Milk, and what he said.

“The only thing they have to look forward to is hope. And you have to give them hope.”

I’ve been thinking about it, because some in San Diego’s LGBT community plan to turn their backs on Carl DeMaio’s contingent in Saturday’s Pride parade. I think this is misguided.

We choose what we want to cultivate. Look forward, chin up, smile; say, “yes,” and say, “love.” You will cultivate hope and good things and progress.

Turn your back, cast your eyes away, and shake your head. You will cultivate nothing.

BREAKING NEWS from the Navy: "Yes they can march at the Pride Parade"

SAN DIEGO -- Sailors based in San Diego most definitely will be allowed to march in uniform with the military contingent at San Diego Pride on Saturday, a Navy spokesman told San Diego Gay & Lesbian News this afternoon.

"Yes they can march in the Pride Parade," said Brian O'Rourke, a Navy spokesman based in San Diego.

O'Rourke said that sailors can march in the Pride Parade in their uniforms, but are reminded to obey all Navy and military regulations prohibiting such things as participation in political activities or protests. That is not the mission of the military contingent.

SATURDAY: SDPIX and SDGLN to host official San Diego Pride Parade Viewing Party at Eden

SAN DIEGO -- One of the biggest challenges many face when heading to the annual San Diego LGBT Pride Parade is choosing where to view the parade from.

As the 38th annual parade, dubbed "America's Pride" this year, passes by this Saturday, one of the best places to view it will be from Eden in Hillcrest, where SDPIX/SDGLN and the nightclub have teamed for the "Official Parade Viewing Party."

Not only will those who attend the party be situated at one of the best spots along the parade route, they will be surrounded by other parade revelers celebrating America's Pride.

VIDEOS: Pride is in the air in San Diego!

SAN DIEGO – Hundreds of LGBT pride celebrations take place in cities and towns across the United States and the world throughout the year, but it is always special when Pride is celebrated at home. There is a certain air of fabulousness that can be felt in the air as the LGBT community and their allies come out in full force, and put on their brightest rainbow colors.

LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY: Carl DeMaio invites community to reception, march with him in San Diego Pride Parade

As a matter of full disclosure, SDGLN Publisher Johnathan Hale has a personal relationship with Carl DeMaio. Their relationship in no way impacts the editorial decisions made by Ken Williams, SDGLN Editor in Chief, and does not influence our political coverage. Williams can be reached at ken@sdgln.com, @KenSanDiego on Twitter or at (877) 727-5446, x713.

This November, San Diego has a strong chance of electing its first LGBT mayor – an amazing development that reflects the diversity and acceptance that we’re proud of in San Diego.
