COMMUNITY PROFILE: Meet Carlos "Charming" Salazar

SAN DIEGO -- Carlos "Charming" Salazar is new to San Diego's LGBT community but has brought with him a wealth of leadership experiences that can only be of benefit to the organizations he has joined.

At 25 years old, he is the CEO of Forward Thinking, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering young adults. He is driven - volunteering his time for numerous boards, organizations and groups - and continues to do things to better himself and the communities around him.

San Diego Pride chooses 2013 theme

SAN DIEGO -- The theme for the 39th annual San Diego LGBT Pride celebration has been announced as "Freedom to Love and Marry." This year's festivities will place July 12-14.

“We are standing at a critical moment in our movement when the very question of our ability to love is before this nation's highest court,” said Fernando Lopez, San Diego Pride Public Affairs Director and longtime marriage equality activist.

St. Paul’s Foundation seeks volunteers for program offering support to parents, friends of LGBT

SAN DIEGO – St. Paul’s Foundation is developing a program that will connect loving parents and friends of LGBT people in the U.S. with concerned parents and friends of LGBT people in countries where their children or friends could be arrested for simply being true to themselves.

It is illegal to be gay in 76 countries around the world, and the program will reach out to parents in nations where LGBT youth struggle for understanding and acceptance, including basic human rights.

"Wheels for Gabby" to raise money for community member in need

SAN DIEGO -- Community members will come together on Monday, Feb. 18, at Baja Betty's for the first in a series of fundraisers to help community member Gabriela "Gabby" Rodriguez raise funds for a down payment on an accessible van.

Friends are calling the effort "Wheels for Gabby."

The fundraiser will include a raffle, door prizes, drinks, appetizers and the opportunity to support Rodriguez.

Cheli Mohamed to leave San Diego Pride staff after 20 years

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego LGBT Pride said today that Araceli "Cheli" Mohamed will be leaving her position at Pride and moving on to serve as the Corporate & Operations Manager of the California Police Athletic Federation.

"Cheli has added more to our organization and in turn to our community than most will ever realize," said Stephen Whitburn, interim general manager of San Diego LGBT Pride. "Through her 20 years of service with Pride her vision, drive and determination have inspired a generation of volunteers and community leaders."

Tomorrow, I begin a leave of absence as executive director of Pride to pursue a personal endeavor, which will continue to engage me in the fight for civil rights and full equality for all people. As I do so, I am encouraged that planning for the 2013 San Diego Pride Celebration, July 12 -14, 2013 is already well underway and quickly shaping up to be one of our best ever. San Diego Pride's Board of Directors, staff and hundreds of volunteers have "got Pride" and will move forward in producing an amazing event!

San Diego Pride seeking nominations for Spirit of Stonewall Awards

SAN DIEGO -- As San Diego Pride gears up for this summer's festivities, the organization is turning to the community to help identify nominees for the annual Spirit of Stonewall Awards.

Nominations are now open for the awards, which recognize individuals who contribute significantly to the LGBT community thought their leadership, activism, and fundraising efforts.

The awards will be presented at a reception during the week leading up to San Diego Pride, which is scheduled for July 12-14.

Stephen Whitburn named interim GM of San Diego Pride as Dwayne Crenshaw runs for open council seat

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Pride's executive director, Dwayne Crenshaw, will take a leave of absence effective Jan. 31 to pursue his candidacy full time for San Diego City Council's vacant District 4 seat.

San Diego Pride to help 2012 grantees increase their funding

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Pride is hoping that community members will help double the grant funds that it distributed to 14 community organizations last week.

After a successful 2012 pride season, the organization was able to grant $28,000 to the organizations, bringing Pride's community giving total to over $85,000 for the year.

The Center to host annual "Come Home for the Holidays" celebration

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego LGBT Community Center will host its annual "Come Home for the Holidays" celebration on Saturday, Dec. 15, from 5-8 pm. The event is organized to bring together the diverse cultures and traditions that make up San Diego's LGBT community.

The free event is family-friendly and open to all. It will include music, food, dancing, a secular candle lighting ceremony, a Native American blessing, and a chance to meet others in the community.
