Hillcrest Pride Flag is raised to full-staff today

SAN DIEGO – The Hillcrest Pride Flag, the community’s new symbol celebrating diversity, has been raised to full-staff today for the first time since its dedication Friday night.

The Pride flag was lowered to half-staff immediately after the ceremony out of respect to the victims of the shooting tragedy in Colorado, as requested by President Barack Obama. During the Spirit of Stonewall Rally on Friday, Pride officials held a moment of silence for the shooting victims.

Jim Winsor's Out & About: Wrapping up Pride weekend parties

Another San Diego Pride weekend has come and gone. I hope everyone is recovering well!

There were, by my count, 71 special Pride-themed club and party events last weekend. To get an idea of how successful the weekend was on that score, I asked several of my friends for comments, and here are a few of the thoughts and reflections they had to share:

LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY: Servicemembers United responds to Sen. Inhofe about Pride Parade

Members of Congress who believe that servicemembers' participation in an LGBT pride parade is equivalent to attending or speaking at a political or campaign rally in uniform have simply failed to do their research and apply common sense.

Senator Inhofe and his like-minded colleagues should spend some time actually meeting and talking with some of these gay troops and veterans instead of using their platform to try to bully the Pentagon into moving backwards.

COMMENTARY: Editor's Notebook reflects on 2012 Pride, and an idiotic letter by Sen. Jim Inhofe

(Editor’s Notebook is an occasional commentary about the state of affairs in the LGBT community.)

Congratulations to San Diego Pride for the spectacular, history-making weekend ...

BREAKING NEWS: Hillcrest hip spot Eden to close

SAN DIEGO – Popular Hillcrest nightclub, patio bar and restaurant Eden will be closing this Friday after months of financial difficulty, San Diego Gay & Lesbian News learned this morning.

The hip gathering spot in Hillcrest has lost its lease, SDGLN has confirmed, and a prospective new tenant has already emerged.

Eden officials said they plan to host a going-away party for the community on Friday, and will release details in the near future.

Stonewall Citizens Patrol vehicle gets a facelift

SAN DIEGO -- The Stonewall Citizens' Patrol's (SWCP) vehicle has received a new look, which was debuted last weekend during San Diego Pride.

Formed in 2006, the organization has owned two vehicles since its founding, which were originally painted white and black, similar to the look of a police car.

SWCP now owns just one vehicle that its volunteers use to patrol the neighborhoods on weekend evenings and during special events. The vehicle's new look includes a white body, with blue striping and the organization's logo.

San Diego Pride's Community Advisory Council seeks feedback

SAN DIEGO -- Now that San Diego's 38th annual LGBT Pride weekend has passed, the organization's Community Advisory Council wants to hear from the community.

The San Diego Pride Community Advisory Council has created a survey to find out a few pieces of information from people about the organization's outreach efforts.

1. The first time American troops have been allowed to march in their military uniforms at a gay parade, a momentous step toward full equality and another milestone set after the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

2. The first time a gay sailor has proposed marriage to his boyfriend in the middle of the Pride Parade, temporarily halting the procession as fellow service members stopped to embrace the joyous occasion.

(Editor's note: San Diego Pride said during the flag-raising ceremony that it would lower the flag to half-staff after the event out of respect to the shooting tragedy in Colorado, as requested by President Barack Obama. Pride also held a moment of silence for the victims in the movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colo.)
