UPDATED BREAKING NEWS: San Diego Pride military contingent gets mixed messages about marching in uniform

SAN DIEGO – Just when it appeared that LGBT troops could march openly and proudly in their military uniforms in the San Diego Pride Parade on Saturday, a last-minute hitch has tossed confusion on the hundreds of service members who had planned to participate.

San Diego Gay & Lesbian News learned today that a top Navy official in San Diego has alerted Pride officials that there is a Navy ban on sailors marching in uniform at civic events. San Diego Pride is the largest civic event in America's Finest City, expected to attract almost 200,000 people this year.

San Diego City Council declares July LGBT Pride Month

SAN DIEGO -- The City Council Tuesday declared July as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month in the city of San Diego.

A proclamation, presented by councilmen Carl DeMaio and Todd Gloria, calls San Diego a "trailblazing city" led by Mayor Jerry Sanders, who frequently speaks out on behalf of marriage equality.

Gloria said the council unanimously supported the change of the name of a Hillcrest roadway to Harvey Milk Street and a 65-foot pole in the center of the city's LGBT community that will fly a rainbow flag.

Raffle prizes set for FilmOut and San Diego Pride screening on Wednesday

SAN DIEGO -- Members of the U.S. military will raise the rainbow flag today at San Diego State University's (SDSU) annual rainbow flag ceremony, beginning at 11:30 am. The event, which is a public campus celebration in recognition of diversity and inclusion, will kick off LGBT Pride week in San Diego.

In the aftermath of the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," military personnel will participate for the first time in the event's five-year history.

SAN DIEGO -- The legendary Dreamgirls Revue will kick off San Diego LGBT Pride weekend with a special evening show on Wednesday, July 18, at Urban Mo's Bar & Grill.

The famed drag group performs nightly shows at venues across Southern California, including two times weekly in San Diego, and is the longest female/celebrity impersonation group in the area.

SAN DIEGO – Active-duty servicemembers have received official approval to march in their uniforms on July 21 as part of America’s Pride Parade military contingent, San Diego Pride officials said today.

Veterans can wear their uniforms in parades and now their active-duty brothers and sisters will be able to march in uniform alongside them with Pride, now that “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) has been repealed.

SAN DIEGO -- Eden just finalized its star-studded Pride weekend lineup. Liberty Pride will feature extended hours on the patio and at Ciro’s Pizza, along with an extensive schedule of events Thursday though Sunday.

To accommodate the extra crowds, the currently closed restaurant will temporarily re-open. The space will be used as a lounge area with additional bar setup throughout Pride; it will also offer a happy hour and a Ciro’s menu, and a buffet brunch on both Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm.
