Final work begins today on Hillcrest Pride Flag project

SAN DIEGO – Workers today began drilling a big hole for the flagpole that will fly the Hillcrest Pride Flag.

The flagpole will be located on the median at Normal Street where it intersects with University Avenue in the heart of Hillcrest.

Organizers told San Diego Gay & Lesbian News today that the flag will be flying in time for San Diego Pride’s Spirit of Stonewall Rally on Friday, July 20.

TODAY: Hillcrest Town Council meeting to take up community issues

SAN DIEGO -- The Hillcrest Town Council (HTC) will hold its next monthly meeting today, July 10, starting at 6:30 pm. Community members and other interested individuals are encouraged to attend the meeting, which will include a number of updates about the group's neighborhood projects.

The resident's group has created a "Hillcrest Vagrancy Task Force," which is seeking solutions to Hillcrest's homelessness problem. The task force will provide an update on their work.

Media Arts Center San Diego to hold Event Photography Boot Camp during Pride parade

SAN DIEGO – Media Arts Center San Diego (MACSD) is inviting aspiring photojournalists to get hands-on experience by photographing the San Diego LGBT Pride Parade later this month.

Instructor Rizzhel Mae Javier invites the community to help document San Diego’s largest community event from 11 am to 3 pm Saturday, July 21, in Hillcrest.

The fee is $75 for the class dubbed “Event Photography Boot Camp.” A critique session follows the event. The fee is reduced to $60 for MACSD members.

Last call for San Diego Pride volunteer registration

SAN DIEGO -- The annual San Diego LGBT Pride celebration - "America's Pride" - is just two weeks away and volunteers are still needed to help make the event a success. As one of the largest such events in the country, the San Diego Pride organization counts on an army of volunteers to make the parade, festival and other events a reality.

Volunteers are needed in a number of areas, including:

- Safety

- Recycling

- Sales and merchandise

- Transportation and communications

- Parade staging

- Exhibitor relations

"Throw Down For A Cause" to raise money for San Diego LGBT youth services

SAN DIEGO -- The next "Throw Down For A Cause" women's Jell-O wrestling fundraiser will be held Wednesday, July 18, at Bourbon Street to raise funds for The San Diego LGBT Community Center and Project Love Out Loud's youth services.

The event was created in 2009 by a group of friends and associates who wanted to do something to create a positive impact in their community. A committee was formed, and the group decided that supporting LGBT youth in San Diego was an issue they wanted to support.

Kelly Rowland cancels San Diego Pride appearance, new entertainment lineup announced

SAN DIEGO -- After Saturday's announcement that Kelly Rowland has cancelled her scheduled performance at this year's San Diego LGBT Pride festival, the organization has announced a re-energized entertainment lineup featuring Alex Newell, who plays “Unique/Wade,” a transgender character, on the hit television show "Glee."

Newell, who will also take part in this year's LGBT Pride Parade, will be billed as a headline performer, along with the previously announced Natasha Bedingfield.

Pool party season is upon us, and there's no better sign of this than the first Guys Like Us (GLU) Pool Party of 2012, coming up July 14 at a private estate in Mission Hills.

Gloria Johnson honored as LGBT Person of the Year for the 76th Assembly District

SAN DIEGO -- Assemblymember Toni Atkins this week honored Gloria Johnson, who has dedicated more than four decades to LGBT equality and other social justice causes, as the LGBT Person of the Year for the 76th Assembly District.

Johnson was recognized Tuesday at a special ceremony on the floor of the State Assembly in Sacramento.
