San Francisco Supervisors barely pass Wiener's proposal to ban nudity

SAN FRANCISCO – A small part of San Francisco’s quirky history is about to get covered up.

The Board of Supervisors voted 6-5 on Tuesday to ban public nudity, prompting a handful of protesters to disrobe and get tossed out of the meeting.

The proposal by openly gay Supervisor Scott Wiener would make it illegal to show one’s genitals in public spaces, with a handful of exceptions including the annual Folsom Street Fair.

Wiener introduces nudity ban in San Francisco

N FRANCISCO -- Nudity will be front and center at San Francisco City Hall now that gay District 8 Supervisor Scott Wiener has moved forward with plans to ban nudists from the city's sidewalks and public plazas.

Last month the Bay Area Reporter broke the news that Wiener, who represents the gay Castro district, was looking at outlawing public nudity. At the board's October 2 meeting he introduced an ordinance that would amend the city's police code to require people be clothed on public streets and parklets as well as on transit vehicles and at Muni stations.

San Francisco's cock ring debate: Wiener open to banning public nudity

SAN FRANCISCO -- A showdown over whether San Francisco should ban public nudity is looming as the issue again rears its head. This time the tipping point may be due to naked men wearing cock rings.

District 8 Supervisor Scott Wiener disclosed to the Bay Area Reporter this week that he is open to introducing legislation at City Hall that would ban public nudity.

"I have not done so right now but I am considering to do that in the near future," said Wiener, whose district covers the Castro and a public plaza where many nudists gather on sunny days.

San Francisco mayor to restore lost federal HIV/AIDS funding

SAN FRANCISCO — Mayor Ed Lee will restore all of the nearly $8 million in federal HIV/AIDS funds that the city expects to lose in the fiscal year beginning July 1.

Supervisor Scott Wiener confirmed the information to the Bay Area Reporter [on Thursday, May 17].

“The mayor really gets it,” Wiener said. “He understands this city has a 30-year commitment to those impacted by this disease, and he has been just an incredible, incredible ally. I’m just really thrilled that he’s doing this.”
