North Park's bicycle and pedestrian friendly identity enhanced

SAN DIEGO -- North Park Planning Committee’s Urban Design-Project Review Subcommittee made the neighborhood a little more bike and pedestrian friendly by sanctioning two new bicycle corrals as well as conceptually approving a new “parklet” on 30th Street.

At the subcommittee’s Jan. 7 meeting, community planners also made substantial progress on updating a proposed land-use map for North Park, distinguishing commercial and residential areas.

THEATER REVIEW: “Clybourne Park” is not your grandma’s play, so be forewarned

The sign in the lobby at San Diego Repertory Theatre says “Presented in blunt colorful language and stress for all.”

The warning refers to their production of Bruce Norris’ “Clybourne Park,” the 2011 Pulitzer Prize-winning riff on Lorraine Hansberry’s 1959 classic “A Raisin In The Sun.”

Hansberry’s play recounts the experiences of the African-American Younger family as they plan a move out of the Southside Chicago ghetto and into a predominantly white neighborhood, and the concomitant racist attempts of the new neighborhood to keep them from moving in.

Montana to consider bill to repeal outdated law that criminalizes gay sex

HELENA, Mont. — LGBT advocates said Monday they hope the Montana state legislature will finally repeal an obsolete state law that criminalized gay sex before it was struck down by the courts in the 1990s.

The Montana Supreme Court in 1997 ruled as unconstitutional the portion of the “deviate sexual relations” law that includes “sexual contact or sexual intercourse between two persons of the same sex” in the same definition that also includes bestiality.

Legislation in Russia aimed at enacting anti-gay law nationwide

MOSCOW — Legislation being pushed by the Kremlin and the Russian Orthodox Church would make it illegal nationwide to provide minors with information that is defined as “propaganda of sodomy, lesbianism, bisexuality and transgenderism,” and includes a ban on holding public events that promote gay rights.

The bill, part of an effort to promote traditional Russian values as opposed to “Western liberalism,” is similar to laws already on the books in St. Petersburg and a number of other Russian cities.
