Community activist Luis Fitch seeking toy donations for Tijuana children

SAN DIEGO -- Community activist Luis Fitch will be hosting a toy drive this Friday, Nov. 30, to benefit homeless children in Tijuana, Mexico.

Fitch is calling on his friends and other community members to help him collect toys so that these children can have a special Christmas season.

City Council approves Mid-City YMCA project

SAN DIEGO – City Councilmember Todd Gloria said today that he successfully championed the approval of the new Copley-Price YMCA project in Mid-City.

The 53,400-square-foot recreation facility will be sited on property bound by 43rd Street, El Cajon Boulevard, Meade Avenue and Fairmount Avenue.

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2013.

Family says Thanksgiving beating of lesbian was a "hate crime"

MOBILE, Ala. -- An Alabama man has been charged with second-degree assault for brutally beating a woman because she is in a relationship with his sister and he does not approve.

Travis Hawkins Jr., 18, was booked into Mobile, Ala., jail on Sunday after turning himself in to authorities for the Thanksgiving Day assault on 23-year-old Mallory Owens. Hawkins bonded out the same day.
