History-making: First same-sex wedding today at West Point chapel

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Brenda S. "Sue" Fulton and Penelope Dara Gnesin will go into the history books today when they get married in the hallowed Cadet Chapel at West Point.

Fulton, 53, graduated from West Point in 1980 in the first class of cadets that included women, another milestone for her. She is the communications director of Outserve, a group representing actively serving gay, lesbian and bisexual troops.

On World AIDS Day, a history of HIV

The term Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, or AIDS, wasn’t coined until the end of 1982 but was a serious problem for the previous decade.

The origin of HIV is still largely a mystery, however, it is thought that the virus was transferred to humans somewhere around 1930. The leading theory is that the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) has ancestral basis from the Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV). How the virus was transferred is still unknown.

The Golden Paw Hillcrest has fundraiser, ribbon-cutting on Saturday

SAN DIEGO -- The Golden Paw Hillcrest will be holding its first-ever “Photos with Santa Adoption Event” fundraiser and a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, Dec 1.

San Diego Councilmember Todd Gloria will lead the ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 am. at the Golden Paw Hillcrest, 3915 Ninth Ave. in San Diego, CA 92103.

Photos with Santa and the adoption event will be from 10:15 am to noon. A donation of $10 is suggested, and all the proceeds will go to Labrador Rescuers of San Diego.

Pita Jungle benefits Meals-on-Wheels and San Diego seniors

SAN DIEGO – Pita Jungle will donate 10% of the proceeds from its Specials Menu to Meals-on-Wheels, effective through Dec. 31.

With items like the Curried Coconut Soup with Chickpeas or the Wood-Fired Cod Salad, Pita Jungle offers a menu to keep warm and healthy during a season that is loaded with casseroles and sweets. Meals-on-Wheels supports San Diego seniors.

No decision today by U.S. Supreme Court on Prop 8/DOMA cases

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Supreme Court did not place any of the gay rights cases on its orders today, adding to the incredible drama that is building up about whether the justices will take up California’s Proposition 8 and the nine DOMA cases.

The high court could also have decided not to take up any of the cases, which would have widespread implications for millions of LGBT Americans. If the justices let lower court rulings stand, Proposition 8 and DOMA would be dead.

World AIDS Day 2012: "Getting to zero"

SAN DIEGO -- As communities around the globe prepare to mark World AIDS Day on Saturday, Dec. 1, the World Health Organization (WHO) is continuing its focus on the number zero.

With this year’s theme being “Getting to Zero,” the international organization hopes to see a day when there are zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination, and zero AIDS related deaths.

More than $360,000 to be granted to local HIV/AIDS service organizations

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego HIV Funding Collaborative announced its 2013 funding recipients this week, as it prepares to grant more than $360,000 to 10 San Diego area HIV/AIDS service organizations.
