Russia essentially bans the gay

MOSCOW -- Russia's parliament, the State Duma, today unanimously passed a federal law banning "gay propaganda" and "non-traditional sexual relations," drawing widespread criticism from human-rights groups. One deputy abstained from voting.

The federal law, similar to the one passed by St. Petersburg last year, is designed to "protect children from information that can bring harm to their health and well-being."

Letter to the community: GLAD executive director to retire

My friend and colleague Lee Swislow has overseen GLAD with skill, finesse, and vision since 2005.

Lee will celebrate her 65th birthday next April, and when she does, she will also embark on a new adventure: retirement.

Lee has led GLAD to major advances in LGBT rights, from the spread of marriage equality across New England to spearheading the fight to bring down the federal Defense of Marriage Act, to winning the right of transgender people to deduct transition-related medical expenses from their taxes, to name only a few recent victories.

Drugged and raped: A soldier tells his story

(Editor's note: SDGLN has exposed a very ugly secret in our community: intentional drugging of victims and male rape. On Thursday, SDGLN published a first-person account of a well-known gay man in San Diego who was drugged and raped sometime after being out celebrating at a nightclub in Hillcrest. We verified the source and his story. Because of the sensitive and personal nature of this incident, we granted his request to run his important first-person story without revealing his name. The story has become the talk of the town.

LA Pride 2013: Biggest, most diverse ever

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- With 130 entrants in West Hollywood’s LA Gay Pride Parade 2013 flowing down the city’s main drag, we were hard put to photograph all of them and even harder put to choose from the hundreds of shots we took of the (long) day.

It was a joyous occasion that showed the LGBT community in all its diversity, the actuality far different than the critics who slammed the parade and festival before it even happened as an "outdated, adolescent mess.”
