Smooth transition, unfinished business mark first anniversary of "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" repeal

WASHINGTON — Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) and OutServe, the association of actively serving LGBT military personnel, on Thursday applauded and celebrated the one-year anniversary of repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” praising the smooth transition the military has made in allowing gay, lesbian, and bisexual Americans to serve openly in the military, and called on the White House, Pentagon, and Congress to embrace and advance the final work necessary to achieve full LGBT equality in the Armed Forces.

WASHINGTON – Freedom to Marry and Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) today released a new online video featuring Chief Warrant Officer (CW2) Charlie Morgan and her wife, Karen, spotlighting the inequalities forced upon gay and lesbian service members by the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

WASHINGTON -- Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) and OutServe, two military gay-rights groups that were formed to fight the Pentagon's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, said today that they plan to merge.

SLDN and OutServe made the announcement via a video posted on YouTube by Aubrey Sarvis of SLDN and Josh Seefried of OutServe.

Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta releases historic Pride VIDEO message

WASHINGTON -- The Human Rights Campaign and other LGBT groups are commending U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta for releasing a historic video message to members of the military commemorating Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month, which takes place each June.

This marks the first Pride season in which service members can openly participate.

"Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was repealed in December 2010, and repeal was implemented last September.

Campaign to mark Memorial Day with petition to end marriage discrimination against military families

WASHINGTON – As Memorial Day approaches, Freedom to Marry and Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) launched a grassroots petition calling on Congress to end marriage discrimination against service members and veterans.

The petition builds support for repealing the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and passing the Respect for Marriage Act, and is part of the new Freedom to Serve, Freedom to Marry national campaign highlighting the stories of military families harmed by DOMA.

OutServe's "Capital Summit" to address needs of LGBT military families

Tonight, OutServe announced that it will be holding a "Capital Summit" on May 14 and 15, with the aim of "gather[ing] actively-serving military of all sexual orientations with experts from resource and advocacy groups to discuss the legal rights of gay and lesbian military partners, as well as resources for their support," according to a release issued by the organization.

UPDATED: Aubrey Sarvis leaving post as SLDN executive director

WASHINGTON – Aubrey Sarvis, who has led Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) for more than four years in a successful fight to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” is leaving the organization.

Sarvis' departure from SLDN is the third major resignation at iconic LGBT organizations in the past year. Geoff Kors, the longtime executive director of Equality California, left his position on March 31, 2011. And Joe Solmonese is departing at the end of March 2012 as president of the Human Rights Campaign.

Sailor discharged under DADT is reinstated

WASHINGTON -- Petty Officer 2nd Class Jase Daniels, discharged from the U.S. Navy in April 2005 and again in March 2007 because of the military's former "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) policy, has been reinstated and will return to active as a linguist, Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) says.

Daniels was sworn in today.
