Heart & Soul: What the Bible really says about homosexuality

You probably heard or read about NBA player Jason Collins, announcing that he is gay. And you probably heard or read about ESPN commentator Chris Broussard’s comments that Jason (and a good portion of the population) is “walking in open rebellion to God, and to Jesus Christ.”

Heart & Soul: We all need a little spring cleaning

One of the wonderful things about living in San Diego is that the weather is gorgeous all year. Having been born and raised here, I never really understood the significance of the arrival of spring, until my husband and I lived in the Boston area for two winters. When the thermometer finally showed 50 degrees, the people in my office and I wanted to break out the windows so we could let the “warm” air in!

Move over, West Hollywood - Silver Lake is the true gay mecca

Could gays of the 1980s imagine what it would be like to be gay in 2013? From the Supreme Court pondering marriage equality to NFL players weighing how best to come out, the way we're gay today is nothing like it's ever been before.

And for that modern gay man, West Hollywood may not be the mecca it once was. Instead, young gays are flocking to Silver Lake and other low-key Eastside neighborhoods.

Frank Rodriguez argues as much: "The gay ghetto is dead," he declares to me one morning, gesturing at his phone. "This," he says, "is what's replaced it."

Fashionably Out: Bringing “skinny” back to ties

You know those pair of jeans you’ve held on to for quite a while now because you keep telling yourself you’ll fit back into them soon? Well, darling, my advice to you is to keep telling yourself that until you gain that motivation and fit back into them!

In the meantime, there are a couple of other things in your closet you’ve kept aside simply because they’re cute or bring back nice memories - but don’t seem to fit into your personal style anymore.

Heart & Soul: Living in the WOW

In 2013, we aren’t always very patient.

Fax machines aren’t fast enough, so we scan and then email whatever it is. And the email better be there in the blink of an eye (or faster), or we will be looking for a new service provider.

We don’t want to get dressed to go to the ATM to deposit a check, so we can scan it on our smart phone and the funds go right into our bank account.
We stand in front of the microwave and yell “hurry!” (Well, at least I do, but don’t tell anyone.)

Heart & Soul: Another look at bullying

It seems like just about every week, we hear about another young man or woman who has committed suicide as a result of bullying.

Unless you were thin, rich and gorgeous growing up, you can probably remember being teased and tormented when you were in school. Of course, not too thin, and not too rich. But if you were overweight, wore glasses, not good in sports or not part of the “in crowd,” you were probably bullied. And if there was any chance you could be LGBT, even if no one in the world knew for sure, including yourself, you went to the top of the list.

Fashionably Out: Which fashion magazine reads you best?

Miranda Priestly: “And you have no sense of fashion.”
Andy Sachs: “I think that depends on …”
Miranda Priestly: “No, no. That wasn’t a question.”

We all know (or should know) that scene from “The Devil Wears Prada” where Miranda first meets Andy, and the above dialogue occurs. Miranda, looking for a new second assistant, is looking for someone who lives, breathes, dreams and talks fashion. Or more importantly, Runway, the fashion magazine this movie centers around.

Report: Six million Americans have an LGBT parent

LOS ANGELES — An estimated 37 percent of LGBT Americans have had a child, meaning as many as six million American children and adults have an LGBT parent, according to findings from a national study released Wednesday by Williams Institute Distinguished Scholar, Gary J. Gates.

Gates said of the study, “These analyses highlight the diversity and prevalence of LGBT parents and their children in the U.S. The data show that LGBT families are clearly part of modern American life.”

Heart & Soul: Talking about the other “f” bomb

(Editor’s note: San Diego Gay & Lesbian News welcomes a new contributor, the Rev. Jerry Troyer. His column, Heart & Soul, will be published every other Tuesday.)

Many of us in the LGBTQ community carry the scars of growing up gay. Maybe at least some of the people in our lives knew; maybe no one knew. But chances are that we knew.

Fashionably Out: Why the “lesbian troll” look is mostly a myth

It’s time to rid ourselves of fashion stereotypes within the LGBT community. This is the 21st century, people. We no longer live in dark days where men were only accepted in a suit and tie, and women only looked appropriate in cocktail dresses.

Men - gay and straight - are starting to wear color, print and fitted jeans. Women - lesbian and straight - are starting to look chic in pantsuits, boxy blazers and muted colors. It is safe to say that fashion is being inspired by both genders, and it’s only moving forward!
