Stepping Stone to host fifth annual Winter Tea

SAN DIEGO -- Community members are invited to Stepping Stone's fifth annual Winter Tea, taking place this Thursday, Dec. 6, from 5-7:30 pm.

The event, which is hosted by the organization's board of directors, will celebrate the holiday season and honor Stepping Stone's volunteers. Attendees will also have the chance to learn more about Stepping Stone and its services, meet the staff, and find out how they can support the organization's life-saving work.

Shakeup hits Stepping Stone of San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- The Stepping Stone of San Diego board of directors today announced a leadership reorganization under which Catherine Aquino, B.S., M.D. will assume the role of interim chief executive officer.

Aquino, who has worked at Stepping Stone since 2008 and was promoted to director of operations in 2011, will begin this interim role immediately.

TODAY: Celebration of life for San Diego community member Chuck Cook, who dies at age 35

SAN DIEGO – Charles Robert Cook, known by friends and loved ones as Chuck, died Monday afternoon from injuries that resulted from a car accident in July. He was 35 years old.

News of Cook’s death sent shockwaves across the University of San Diego (USD) campus as well throughout the local LGBT community, as he was an active participant in many campus and community activities and organizations.

Stepping Stone board member offers $10,000 matching grant

SAN DIEGO -- Community members are encouraged to take advantage of an opportunity to support Stepping Stone of San Diego and have their donation matched dollar-for-dollar thanks to a $10,000 challenge grant given to the organization by local business owner Mike Seymour, the newest addition to the organization's board of directors.

Seymour, who is founder and president of MSE Landscape Professionals, wanted to celebrate his appointment to the board by providing the grant, which will match all donations dollar-for-dollar, up to $10,000, during the month of July.

Stepping Stone CEO elected to City Heights Area Planning Committee

SAN DIEGO – John DeMiranda, president and CEO of Stepping Stone of San Diego, was elected to the City Heights Area Planning Committee (CHAPC) at a meeting Monday night.

DeMiranda, who has been at the helm of Stepping Stone since 2008, recently moved to the City Heights neighborhood, which is also home to the organization’s residential treatment facility and administrative offices.

Receiving a graduate degree from Harvard University, DeMiranda has worked in the alcohol and drug problems field for more than 34 years and is in long term recovery.

Gay Men's Spiritual Retreat honors Stepping Stone at annual dinner

SAN DIEGO – At its annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser Sunday night, the Gay Men’s Spiritual Retreat (GMSR) presented Stepping Stone of San Diego with its top honor, the Brandon Gray Community Service Award.

COMMENTARY: Time for next generation of LGBT leaders to step forward

Rep. Barney Frank’s unexpected decision to retire from the House of Representatives, coupled with Rep. Tammy Baldwin’s bid to win the Senate seat from Wisconsin, suddenly leaves the door wide open for the next generation of LGBT leaders in Congress.

Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) and Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) are expected to assume a leadership role on LGBT issues as the only other out members in Congress. Polis -- who along with his partner Marlon Reis are new parents to son Caspian Julius – has been a consistent voice for gay rights along with Frank and Baldwin.

Mama's Kitchen's new facility with expanded services opens today

SAN DIEGO -- Starting today, Mama's Kitchen officially opens the doors to its new facility, increasing the organization's ability to serve San Diegans living with HIV/AIDS and cancer.

The organization's operations have been moved from a leased space in a church basement to an 11,000-square-foot, warehouse-style facility on Home Avenue. This a major step forward for Mama's Kitchen, which has been serving three hot meals a day to its clients, 365 days a year, since its founding in 1990.
