Assembly passes Toni Atkins bill to streamline transgender name changes

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Bill 1121, authored by Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins (D-San Diego), was passed by the California State Assembly today.

County Supervisor Dave Roberts to be honored at Equality Awards in San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- The annual Equality Awards, presented by Equality California (EQCA), will be held in San Diego on Saturday, June 1 from 6-11 pm, honoring San Diego County Supervisor Dave Roberts.

The event will include a reception, dinner and awards, and an after-party. California Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins will be the special guest, and the evening's host will be Michael Chen of ABC 10. USC constitutional law expert professor David Cruz will provide an update on the pending U.S. Supreme Court decisions during the event.

Harvey Milk Day is celebrated each year on May 22, the birthday of the slain gay civil rights leader. The day was established in 2009 by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and is recognized in California as a day of special significance for public schools.

Three EQCA-sponsored bills clear committees with bipartisan support

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Three Equality California-sponsored bills focused on reducing discrimination and improving the health and equality of LGBT Californians have passed their respective committees with broad, bipartisan support.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Cultural Competency for Health Care Providers Act (AB 496), authored by Assemblymember Richard Gordon, passed the Assembly Business, Professions and Consumer Protection Committee by a bipartisan vote of 10-1-1.

Dr. Delores Jacobs honored for commitment to public service

SAN DIEGO -- Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins has honored eight local woman - including Dr. Delores Jacobs of The San Diego LGBT Community Center - for their exemplary commitment to public service.

Toni Atkins bill would strengthen California's coastal protections

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) today introduced legislation that will give the California Coastal Commission the power to levy penalties against those who disregard orders to stop violating the California Coastal Act.

AB 976 will bring Coastal Commission authority in line with most other state agencies tasked with enforcing environmental laws.

Speculation grows over Speaker John A. Pérez as Obama Cabinet pick

Speculation is growing throughout California and Washington, D.C. that President Barack Obama will name gay Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez (D-Los Angeles) as the next labor secretary.

The news hit last week that Pérez is on the short list for the appointment in an Associated Press report February 5. If chosen Pérez would become the first out person named to a cabinet level post in a presidential administration.
