Oregon to remove gender identity exclusion for transgender employees from state health plan

PORTLAND, Ore. -- - Lambda Legal announced today that the State of Oregon has changed an employee health care policy to remove all language that denies coverage to transgender people for transition-related health care.

The change came in response to a lawsuit filed by Lambda Legal and cooperating attorney Jennifer Middleton on behalf of Alec Esquivel, who was denied insurance coverage as a State employee for a medically necessary surgery because he is transgender.

First transgender contestant to compete for Miss California USA crown

Among the 229 contestants competing for the title of Miss California USA this weekend will be Kylan Arianna Wenzel, a 26-year-old transgender woman from Century City, Calif.

Wenzel will be the first ever transgender contestant after the Miss Universe Organization changed its rules in April last year — Miss Universe operates the Miss USA pageant, and the local pageants that determine the state delegates.

Anti-transgender pageant contestant ordered to pay $5 million for defamation

A former Miss Pennsylvania USA, who gave up her state crown shortly after the Miss Universe organization announced its decision to allow transgender participants, has been ordered pay the pageant organization $5 million for defamation.

Sheena Monnin, who quit the pageant in June, told national media that the pageant was "rigged," and that she saw the list of the Top 5 on the morning of the pageant, "before the show ever started."
