Transgender woman wins discrimination case

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Savanna DeLong lost three jobs after she began coming out as a transgender woman in late 2010.

But only in Columbus, where a 2008 ordinance added gender identity to local anti-discrimination laws, was she able to take a former employer to court.

Franklin County Municipal Court Judge H. William Pollitt Jr., levied a $1,000 fine yesterday against Columbus Hospitality Management for retaliating against DeLong and denying her work at the Capital Club, a private Downtown club.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has released a guide to assist administrators, coaches and students develop a more inclusive environment for LGBT college athletes.

California bill would protect transgender students

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Assemblymember Tom Ammiano has introduced the School Success and Opportunity Act, Assembly Bill 1266, co-authored by Sens. Mark Leno and Ricardo Lara. The bill will ensure that California public schools understand their responsibility for the success and well-being of all students, including transgender students, and will allow transgender students to fully participate in all school activities, programs, and facilities.

ESPN980 suspends hosts for transphobic comments

Following outreach from GLAAD, ESPN980 in Washington D.C. announced today that it has suspended Steve Czaban and Andy Pollin, hosts of the "Sports Reporters" show, over a segment they ran last week in which the pair made fun of transgender college basketball player Gabrielle Ludwig.

In Brazil, trans woman stoned to death

ARACAJU, Brazil -- A 39-year-old trans woman was stoned to death in the city of Aracaju, Brazil.

The 39-year-old was well known and liked, known locally as “Madonna,” died from her wounds earlier this week, after she was attacked by an unknown group of people with cobblestones.

Madonna, who was birth-name was Amos Chagas Lima, received mortal blows and was admitted to a hospital in Aracaju, the capital of the state of Sergipe, Brazil, in the early hours of Friday last week. She died four days later from severe head injuries.

Anti-gay talk show “José Luis Sin Censura” dumped from airwaves

LOS ANGELES – The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) today announced that “José Luis Sin Censura,” produced and broadcast by Liberman Broadcasting, Inc. (LBI) on the EstrellaTV network, has been permanently removed from the broadcast schedule. NHMC and GLAAD were informed of this development in a letter from Winter Horton, LBI’s Chief Operating Officer. The show was broadcast during the daytime in over 30 markets across the country.

Olympics accused of lack of action against discrimination ahead of LGBT sports event
