The Trevor Project brings on new leadership

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- The Trevor Project begins its new fiscal year by announcing the election of Meredith Kadlec as chair of the board of directors.

Kadlec, recently a senior vice president at Here Media, has served on the board since 2007 and will hold the post of chair for two years. She is the first lesbian to hold this post with The Trevor Project, the leading provider of crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBT and questioning youth, ages 13-24.

The Trevor Project honors Susan Sarandon, MTV

NEW YORK -- The Trevor Project honored Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon with the Trevor Hero Award, presented by Stanley Tucci, at the Trevor Live ceremony on Monday, June 25.

Stephen Friedman, president of MTV, accepted the Trevor 2020 Award for MTV at Pier 60, Chelsea Piers.

The event also featured the first comedic reunification of Eric McCormack and Debra Messing ("Will & Grace"), comedy by Judy Gold and a musical performance by fun.

Jim Winsor's Out & About: GLU Pool Party set for July 14

Pool party season is upon us, and there's no better sign of this than the first Guys Like Us (GLU) Pool Party of 2012, coming up July 14 at a private estate in Mission Hills.

These GLU parties have traditionally been some of the best and most eagerly anticipated pool parties locally. You can view photos from some of the previous events here. Fundraisers for their AIDS Walk team, the GLU has raised thousands of dollars for the cause over the years.

LGBT youth and allies rally today with California lawmakers for school safety and equality

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Nearly 60 California high school students are talking today with state lawmakers and administrators about the harm caused by extreme discipline policies like "zero tolerance" and the need to implement protections for LGBT youth.

The students attending the seventh annual Queer Youth Advocacy Day are LGBT and straight ally youth activists representing Gay-Straight Alliance clubs from towns and cities across state.

Coming out to supportive families offers health benefits

As it turns out, coming out of the closet is good for your health -- if your family members are supportive, that is.

A new study conducted by the Boston University School of Public Health found that two thirds of lesbian, gay and bisexual adults in a representative Massachusetts sample experienced significantly less mental health and substance abuse problems if they received positive support from their parents after coming out.

Daniel Radcliffe PSA for The Trevor Project debuts on "Glee"

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — The Trevor Project’s new life-saving, life-affirming public service announcement (PSA) featuring Daniel Radcliffe premiered Tuesday night on Fox during the network’s hit series “Glee.”

The 30-second spot, which aired at no cost to the organization, empowers young people who are LGBTQ to call the Trevor Lifeline if they need support or are considering suicide. The spot will also run on Hulu in conjunction with this episode of “Glee.”

The Trevor Project names new executive director

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- After conducting a nationwide search, The Trevor Project announced today the selection of Abbe Land as its new executive director and CEO.

Land will begin her tenure with The Trevor Project in March and will take over for David McFarland, who has served in an interim role since April 2011.

Through the transition, McFarland will continue as interim executive director and CEO.

Land, a recognized and respected health care professional, brings an impressive history of ensuring care to under-represented populations.

Brian Thompson, psychiatrist at UCSD Owen Clinic in Hillcrest, dies at 36

SAN DIEGO – Brian Thompson, a psychiatrist and a member of San Diego’s LGBT community, died on the afternoon of Jan. 2, according to his partner Ron Thistlethwaite. Thompson was 36.

Thislethwaite said Thompson helped many people through his work at UCSD Owen Clinic. In Thompson’s description of himself on his Twitter profile page, he wrote that he was an “everyday psychiatrist, trying to stomp out mental illness one neuron at a time …”

VIDEO: Tanya Vinson, founder of MyEve4Eve.com, dies at age 33

SAN DIEGO – Tanya Vinson, a local LGBT community personality and activist, died in Illinois in the early morning hours of Saturday, Dec. 17, said her mother, Nancy Mattox of Tacoma, Wash.

Vinson was 33 years old. The cause of death remains unclear.

Mattox said that Vinson, of San Diego, was in Chicago visiting friends and family for the holidays when she died. Vinson attended Tacoma Community College, and was mother to five children, including two teenagers who reside in Washington state.

Bourbon Street is back! University Heights bar and restaurant to resume popular nightlife events tonight

SAN DIEGO – After a brief entertainment hiatus, Bourbon Street Bar & Grill will resume its music, dancing and special-events lineup on Thursday, Dec. 1.

The popular bar and restaurant has long been a place for San Diego’s LGBT community to come together, eat, drink, celebrate and oftentimes attend events that support charities. The bar plans to kick off the month with a big lineup of special events, including the return of customer favorites such as Karaoke Tuesdays, WET Thursdays, the Dreamgirls Revue on Saturdays and the Sunday women’s night.
