San Diego Zoo plan could bring more parking to Balboa Park

SAN DIEGO -- For years, the San Diego Zoo has wanted to expand its exhibits and build more parking in Balboa Park.

Now, the zoo is reviving its plans to build 4,800 parking spaces in an underground garage, the U-T San Diego’s Roger Showley reported Monday afternoon. And it has an idea on how to help pay for it: charging for parking.

U-T San Diego: Irwin Jacobs endorses DeMaio

SAN DIEGO -- One of San Diego’s most influential Democrats — Qualcomm co-founder Irwin Jacobs — has endorsed Republican City Councilman Carl DeMaio for mayor, according to the DeMaio campaign.

DeMaio, who is running against Democratic Rep. Bob Filner in the Nov. 6 election, has repeatedly said on the campaign trail that he is building a broad-based coalition of Democrats, Republicans and independents that support his candidacy. Up until now, he hasn’t had a high-profile Democrat in the fold to back up that campaign theme.

Legislation proposed to make "unemployment status" a protected class in job application process

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California could be on its way to becoming the nation’s first state to add unemployment status to the list of protected classes such as race and religion when it comes to discrimination in job interviews.

Assembly Bill 1450, making its way through Sacramento, would make it illegal to list current employment as a prerequisite in job ads, and to take someone’s unemployment status into account when considering who to hire.

Prospect of gay SD mayor greeted with shrug

SAN DIEGO -- The chatter thus far in the mayor’s race — focused on pensions, civic projects and budget woes — is drowning out the fact that the winner could make San Diego one of a few major U.S. cities with an openly gay mayor.

Two high-profile candidates — City Councilman Carl DeMaio and District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis — are gay Republicans who, if elected, would represent the culmination of an LGBT movement that emerged in the 1970s from the then-declining neighborhood of Hillcrest.
