LONDON – Gay-rights activist Peter Tatchell met today at Lambeth Palace with Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and came away with the impression that leader of the world’s 78 million-strong Anglican Communion is struggling to support equality.

LONDON – Amid all the accolades and tributes being paid to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who died today at age 87, are voices from the LGBT community who remember the conservative leader for legislating the anti-gay law, Section 28.

Peter Tatchell, one of the leading human rights activists in the United Kingdom, criticized “The Iron Lady” for her anti-gay positions and for other reasons.

“Margaret Thatcher was an extraordinary woman but she was extraordinary for mostly the wrong reasons. So many of her policies were wrong and heartless,” he said.

Cardinal Keith O’Brien, the United Kingdom’s most vocal faith opponent of marriage equality, admitted to sexual misconduct. He resigned from his post last week, amid allegations of sexual misconduct with a seminary student and three young priests over 30 years ago. He has now announced that he will no longer contest the allegations.

Efforts to reduce HIV transmission among UK gay and bisexual men over the past decade have failed, according to a new study.

The research published in today’s Lancet (Feb .1) shows that infection rates have remained stable despite increased testing and treatment.

While there has been a four-fold increase in testing rate and an advance in treatment uptake from 69 to 80 percent, new infections in England and Wales have flat-lined at 2,300 to 2,500 a year.
