A new era dawns for Flicks in Hillcrest

SAN DIEGO – For nearly 30 years, Flicks has been a popular video bar and drinking establishment in the heart of Hillcrest, but most importantly it’s been a meeting place. And that is exactly what new owner Jeff Jackson wants it to remain -- a place where friends meet, connect and celebrate.

Jackson and his partner Paul, who moved to San Diego about 11 years ago, met their first friends in town at Flicks.

Babycakes to sell "A Cupcake to Remember" to raise money for San Diego Remembers

SAN DIEGO -- Those with a sweet tooth can do their part to stand up against hate by purchasing the special "A Cupcake To Remember" between now and Oct. 14 at Babycakes.

San Diego Remembers, a local community organization that coordinates a number of anti-hate education activities, has partnered with the cupcake bar to sell the sweet treat as a fundraiser for their programs, including the upcoming fifth annual San Diego Remembers Matthew Shepard March, taking place on Tuesday, Oct. 9.

New biking initiatives take to San Diego's streets

SAN DIEGO -- A new public bicycle corral was the centerpiece of a set of new bike-friendly initiatives launched Sept. 6 in North Park. The initiatives bring San Diego closer to similar commuter environments in two other large cities, both with bike-friendly policies that are a model for the nation and provide a natural fit for San Diego.

Canopy of lights to add sparkle to University Avenue in Hillcrest

SAN DIEGO -- A canopy of lights will soon hang over University Avenue in Hillcrest, as the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) board voted last night to approve a project to add sparkle to one of the neighborhood’s main thoroughfares.

The Hillcrest Light Canopy Project will install 14 strings of festoon lighting -- attached to the buildings on each side of the block -- over University Avenue between Fourth and Fifth avenues. The lights will include technology to allow the light colors to be changed remotely or set on a programmable schedule.

CONTEST: Name entertainment complex at 1202 University Ave. in Hillcrest

SAN DIEGO -- The new owners of the entertainment complex located at 1202 University Ave., which most recently housed Eden, have turned to the community to help them name the nightclub portion of the space.

The venue will be connected to The Range Kitchen & Cocktails, which is currently in the process of moving from its former location across the street.

An online survey has been posted and community members are encouraged to select from one of the 11 suggested names, or submit their own.

SDGLN Exclusive: Former Eden space to reopen Friday with "To Be Renamed" party

SAN DIEGO – The highly visible space at the northeast corner of University Avenue and Vermont Street most recently housing Eden Nightclub and Restaurant will not be dark for much longer. In fact, the new owners officially took control of the space today, and will reopen the venue’s patio and nightclub space this Friday and Saturday night for a special “To Be Renamed” party.

Creating a business-friendly bicycling district in Uptown

SAN DIEGO -- While a push is on to improve infrastructure to make Uptown more bicycle friendly, cyclists and motorists alike are being reminded they need to follow the rules of the road and drive more defensively.

“Roads are for people, not just for people in cars,” said Jim Baross, a longtime cyclist and chair of the Normal Heights Planning Group. Baross has been involved in cycling-related transportation planning for years.

BREAKING NEWS: Hillcrest hip spot Eden to close

SAN DIEGO – Popular Hillcrest nightclub, patio bar and restaurant Eden will be closing this Friday after months of financial difficulty, San Diego Gay & Lesbian News learned this morning.

The hip gathering spot in Hillcrest has lost its lease, SDGLN has confirmed, and a prospective new tenant has already emerged.

Eden officials said they plan to host a going-away party for the community on Friday, and will release details in the near future.
