Community members invited to discuss future of University Heights

SAN DIEGO -- Join the conversation about the future of University Heights on Thursday, May 16 from 6:30-8 pm at the Grace Lutheran Church.

Our community is reviewing the City's proposed Community Plan Update land use maps and your feedback is critical to making the right decisions. Should we increase or decrease residential or commercial density and where should new housing units go? What should happen in the future with the School Administration site?

So why does the latest blueprint for Uptown, a central urban neighborhood that seems to fit the city's mold for growth, call for a big drop in residential density?

New sign welcomes travelers to Uptown neighborhoods

SAN DIEGO -- At the northern entrance into University Heights and North Park on Texas Street, a new welcome sign for the two Uptown neighborhoods was revealed Tuesday, March 12, in part to unveil several dedicated pedestrian improvements that help facilitate easier access to and from Mission Valley.

The monument, which reads “Welcome to The Historic Communities of North Park & University Heights,” is situated at the bottom of Texas Street near its intersection with Camino Del Rio South.

PGK Dance performs "San Diego Dances" this weekend

SAN DIEGO -- PGK Dance Project will present "San Diego Dances" in University Heights on Friday and Saturday, March 15-16.

The dance company is headed by Peter G. Kalivas.

"San Diego Dances" will be at 7:30 pm March 15-16 in 3rd Space, a funky, multi-level loft at 4610 Park Blvd. in University Heights. Advance tickets are $20; $15 for students, military and seniors. Tickets cost $5 more at the door.

The show will feature world premieres by Natasha Ridley, Viviana Alcazar and Peter G. Kalivas with guest musicians performing new music by Amanuel Zarzowski.

New mural brings "good, positive energy" to University Heights

SAN DIEGO -- Five local artists recently transformed a large blank wall at a grocery store in University Heights into a psychedelic landscape replete with a pixie butterfly, banjo-playing frog, garden gnome and grimacing trees.

The work on the side of Park Boulevard Foods, located at 4504 Park Blvd., was meant to spruce up and add some color to the neighborhood, said Alvin Habib, the store’s owner.

“It just brings out good, positive energy,” he said. “It’s a nice addition to this community.”

University Heights community group creates interactive map of historic sidewalk stamps

SAN DIEGO -- As University Heights celebrates its 125th anniversary, the community has an important new historic resource, thanks to the hard work of UH resident and historical society volunteer, Bill Ellig.

Buyer interest strong in Uptown neighborhoods

SAN DIEGO -- Despite the sluggish economy, the state of residential real estate transactions remains strong in Uptown neighborhoods, and Marla Hovland, vice president and realtor with San Diego-based CityMark Realty, said there are several attributes boding well for the area, including a strong sense of community and support for many historic buildings that dot the landscape.

Uptown Planners approves plans for community improvements

SAN DIEGO -- In a special meeting of the Uptown Planners, the community-planning group heard and approved an action item regarding projects specific to San Diego’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for fiscal year 2014.

Board member Christopher Ward led a subcommittee to review and recommend items to be voted on by the larger group in regards to the CIP. The group unanimously approved the subcommittee’s recommendations, moving them to the next governing body in the process, the Community Planners Committee (CPC).

Volunteers needed to help "Clean UH Up"

SAN DIEGO -- The next "Clean UH Up" effort will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 9 am to noon.

The event, organized by the University Heights Community Association (UHCA), encourages residents and others who care about the neighborhood to come together and spruce up the area.

This Saturday's clean-up will focus on the Washington Street/Lincoln Avenue/Highway 163 area, which is considered by some to be the "gateway to University Heights."
