The city's plan for growth broadly envisions a network of compact urban neighborhoods where people live close to their jobs, public transit and retail.

So why does the latest blueprint for Uptown, a central urban neighborhood that seems to fit the city's mold for growth, call for a big drop in residential density?

Uptown Planners approves plans for community improvements

SAN DIEGO -- In a special meeting of the Uptown Planners, the community-planning group heard and approved an action item regarding projects specific to San Diego’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for fiscal year 2014.

Board member Christopher Ward led a subcommittee to review and recommend items to be voted on by the larger group in regards to the CIP. The group unanimously approved the subcommittee’s recommendations, moving them to the next governing body in the process, the Community Planners Committee (CPC).

Hillcrest Pride Flag to fly high after ceremony Friday night

SAN DIEGO – After months of planning, fundraising and hard work, a rainbow flag will finally fly permanently over Hillcrest.

Friday at 6:30 pm, the Hillcrest Pride Flag will be raised for the first time during a special ceremony that will kick off “America’s Pride” weekend in San Diego. Community members who attend San Diego Pride’s annual Spirit of Stonewall Rally, which will be held on Harvey Milk and Normal streets in Hillcrest, will be able to witness the flag’s first official raising at the end of the program.

Hillcrest Pride Flag on track for installation by July

SAN DIEGO -- The first step in the installation of the Hillcrest Pride Flag began today.

Workers from the Southern California Soil & Testing, Inc. performed core testing this morning to prepare a geotechnical report in advance of construction.

ACTION ALERT: Hillcrest Pride Flag project to be reviewed by City Council on May 15

SAN DIEGO -- The fate of the proposed Hillcrest Pride Flag project will be decided upon by the San Diego City Council at its 2:30 pm meeting on Tuesday, May 15.

Community members are being encouraged by project organizers to express their support of the proposal to the council via email, by attending the meeting, or both.

Hillcrest Pride Flag project moves forward in the planning process

SAN DIEGO -- The proposed Hillcrest Pride Flag project is moving through the City of San Diego's planning process, and will go before both the San Diego Planning Commission and the San Diego City Council in upcoming weeks.

The planning commission will review the proposal at its April 12 meeting, and will forward its recommendation to the full City Council in advance of its May 15 meeting, at which time the final ruling on the project's outcome will be made.

Filter Coffeehouse's patio plan to be discussed Tuesday by Uptown Planners

SAN DIEGO -- The board of the Uptown Planners will consider a number of community issues, including two affecting Hillcrest, at its next meeting on Tuesday, April 3.

Included with the four "Potential Action Items" listed on the agenda, the planning group will discuss a Neighborhood Use Permit application submitted by Filter Cofffeehouse at 1295 University Ave. The popular cafe currently has an outdoor seating area, but has applied to renovate its 200-square foot sidewalk cafe.

Uptown Planners elect new board members

SAN DIEGO -- At the Uptown Planners meeting on March 6, an election was held to determine the new board of directors, which will serve for four years. Of the nine candidates, seven were elected to the board and there were 184 votes cast.

The new board will consist of: Ernestine Bonn of University Heights, Thomas Fox of Bankers Hill, Beth Jaworski of University Heights, Jim Mellos of Mission Hills, Joe Naskar of Mission Hills, Christopher Ward of University Heights and Matt Winter of Hillcrest.
