Uptown Planners votes to support Harvey Milk Street project

SAN DIEGO – The proposal to rename Blaine Street in Hillcrest after LGBT civil rights hero Harvey Milk received a thumbs-up from the Uptown Planners at a meeting Tuesday night.

The Uptown Planners board, which is a citizens group that provides advisory recommendations to the City of San Diego regarding land use and projects in the neighborhoods within the Uptown Community Plan area, voted 6-4 in favor of changing the street’s name to Harvey Milk Street.

SAN DIEGO -- Another project of interest to many in the LGBT community will go before the Uptown Planners today, March 6, at 6 pm.

The group will vote on a proposal to rename Hillcrest's Blaine Avenue as Harvey Milk Street.

Hillcrest Town Council endorses pride flag project

SAN DIEGO -- The Hillcrest Pride Flag project continues to gain momentum in the community, as the Hillcrest Town Council (HTC) voted on a motion to endorse the project at its meeting Tuesday night.

Community members who are working on developing the project envision a 65-foot pole in the median in the center of Normal Street at University Avenue. The pole will fly a large rainbow flag year-round. The Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) and San Diego LGBT Pride have agreed to ensure that the flag is insured and maintained regularly.

Uptown Planners give green light to Hillcrest Pride Flag project

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego’s LGBT community had a lot to celebrate Tuesday night after a local planning group approved a proposal to install a large flag pole in Hillcrest that will fly a rainbow flag year round, on the same day the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a ruling that denying same-sex couples the right to marry is unconstitutional.

The board provides advisory recommendations to the City of San Diego regarding land use and projects in the Uptown Community Plan area, which includes most of the Hillcrest, Mission Hills, Bankers Hill and Park West neighborhoods.

TODAY: City Council to review the Uptown Interim Height Ordinance

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego City Council will consider an amendment to the Uptown Interim Height Ordinance (IHO) at its meeting at 2 pm today. Residents on both sides of the issue plan to address the council on the ordinance, which limits building heights in Uptown to 65 feet while the community plan is being updated.

Vacant office space in Hillcrest to become Walgreens

SAN DIEGO -- Originally proposed to be part of a boutique hotel, the vacant building at 301 University Ave. in Hillcrest will become a Walgreens before the end of 2012.

Bruce Leidenberger, one of the three co-owners of the property, proposed the space be made into a hotel in late 2007, but had difficulty getting the proper financing. At the time, Leidenberger’s business partner explained the proposal to the Uptown Planners, which was approved with all 13 board members in favor.
