Tickets available for 11th annual Hillcrest Mardi Gras

SAN DIEGO -- Plans are in the works for the 11th annual Hillcrest Mardi Gras, to be held on "Fat Tuesday" - Tuesday, Feb. 21, from 6-11 pm.

The popular event will transform three block of Hillcrest's University Avenue into "eccentric wonder" for "the street party of the decade."

The event will include dancing, entertainment, food, drink, games, costumes and other surprises, benefiting the GSDBA Charitable Foundation's student scholarship programs and the Hillcrest Business Association's community improvements.

Jim Winsor's Out & About: Gay Football Pub Crawl through Hillcrest this Saturday

The San Diego American Flag Football League will kick off the 2012 season with its sixth annual Pub Crawl this Saturday at 2 pm, immediately following their league Rookie Camp.

All past, present and future SDAFFL players, fans and supporters are invited to attend.

TONIGHT: SDPIX to present Dreamgirls Revue's "Death Wish" at Urban Mo's | VIDEO

SAN DIEGO -- The legendary Southern California drag performance troupe, The Dreamgirls Revue, will present "Death Wish," a special edition of the popular show tonight at Urban Mo's Bar & Grill in conjunction with SDPIX.

Unlike the troupe's regular shows, which are rehearsed, the cast has been asked to bring three costumes tonight and have not been told which songs they will be performing as the audience will choose.

Hillcrest Walgreens proposal is questioned

Response to the proposed Walgreens pharmacy renovation for the vacant medical building at 301 University Ave. in Hillcrest has been swift and intense, following a story published in San Diego Uptown News (SDUN) on Jan. 6. The article stated the building located across from Urban Mo’s Bar & Grill will become a Walgreens before the end of 2012.

With an initial response from Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) Executive Director Benjamin Nicholls condemning the proposal, further insight into what is best for the business district in Hillcrest came into question.

VIDEOS: Dallas man "pops the question" at Urban Mo's - Did his boyfriend say yes?

SAN DIEGO – Love was in the air at Urban Mo’s Bar & Grill last week as customer Christopher Box proposed to his partner Sammy McKinzie.

Box, who lives in Dallas, Texas, with McKinzie, enlisted the help of several friends in organizing the proposal, which was kept a surprise.

A group of about 20 friends and family joined Box and McKinzie for dinner and drinks Thursday night at Urban Mo’s and were led to an area at the bar close to the dance floor just before 7 pm.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: A better IHO for Hillcrest

The future of the derelict building across from Urban MOs has finally been determined.

Over the last few years, plans for 301 University have ranged from residential tower, to mixed use residential/retail, to boutique hotel – each with community amenities, extra parking, new residents and an active retail street scene. However, these plans have failed due to differing visions of Hillcrest’s future.

Now, one plan has succeeded: 301 University is to be a Walgreens store.

TONIGHT: Community members to host fundraiser for Sam Cuevas family

SAN DIEGO -- To help cover some of the funeral expenses of Sam Cuevas, who died on Nov. 22, a group of his friends will host a fundraiser for his family tonight at The Lincoln Room.

The event will begin at 9 pm and include a host bar, complimentary appetizers and music.

1984 Hillcrest sign to be auctioned

SAN DIEGO -- At the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) board of directors 
meeting on Dec. 13, the board unanimously voted to auction off the 1984 Hillcrest sign.

The 1984 sign, which was replaced by the current sign in August 2011, will be auctioned off in early 2012. The board approved the auction with two conditions, according to a news release. “The
 first being that once ownership is procured the sign must be displayed in Hillcrest and that, secondly, new ownership must provide transportation from the sign’s current location to its new location,” according to the statement.
