Victory Fund to host annual Women's Pride Brunch in new location

SAN DIEGO -- The Victory Fund will once again celebrate out women in politics before the San Diego Pride parade on Saturday, July 13 at the Women's Pride Brunch.

Rep. Nickie Antonio - the first openly LGBT person elected to the Ohio state legislature - will be the special guest at the event.

The event will be at a new venue this year, Brazen BBQ Smokehouse & Bar, from 9-11 am. The San Diego LGBT Pride Parade will step off at 11 am just blocks from the restaurant.

Victory Fund calls out Barney Frank on opposition to gay GOP candidate

Gay Massachusetts congressman Barney Frank opposes the election of gay Republican congressional candidate Richard Tisei from his state, but the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, which has endorsed Tisei, is speaking out on the importance of having out LGBT officials from both major parties.

Frank, a Democrat who is retiring this year after decades in the House of Representatives, said Thursday that a Tisei victory would actually be a setback to LGBT rights, as it would help Republicans keep their House majority.

New Hampshire elects first gay state senator

David Pierce, who has been a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives since 2006, was victorious in his Democratic primary for state senate on Sept. 11 and became the first openly gay candidate to be elected to the state senate as a freshman. Pierce has been credited for inspiring floor speech in 2009 that swayed the votes needed to pass New Hampshire’s historic marriage equality law and has also been a leader in the protection of voting rights and measures igniting economic growth.

Florida elects first openly gay state legislator

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — David Richardson has become the first openly LGBT candidate elected to the Florida state legislature.

He won a Democratic primary Tuesday night to represent the Miami-area District 113 in the Florida House of Representatives, and faces no GOP opponent this fall.

Florida had been the largest U.S. state never to have elected an out state lawmaker. It is also among the largest states without significant statewide LGBT non-discrimination laws.

Gay congressional candidate wins key primary in Wisconsin

The next openly gay member of Congress will almost certainly be Wisconsin State Rep. Mark Pocan, a progressive small business owner who won the Democratic primary Tuesday night in the Congressional District that has been represented by Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin for the past 14 years.

The primary winner is normally the heavy favorite to win the general election in the Democratic-leaning 2nd Congressional District.

More than 50 LGBT candidates win elections across America

LGBT candidates and issues fared well during elections Tuesday night across the U.S.

At least 53 of 75 candidates endorsed by the Victory Fund won their elections, and two races remain undecided. Of the 75 candidates endorsed by the Victory Fund in 2011, 46 were non-incumbents, 22 were women and 15 were people of color.

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Tammy Baldwin, an out Democrat from Wisconsin, announced today that she would indeed run for the U.S. Senate and make a bid to become the first openly gay senator in American history.

Gay rights supporters immediately endorsed Baldwin, including the Victory Fund and the Human Rights Campaign, because of her long-standing support of equality issues.

First African-American lesbian lawmaker to speak at Women's Pride Brunch

SAN DIEGO – History-making politician Simone Bell will be landing in America’s Finest City to speak at the 11th annual San Diego Women’s Pride Brunch on Saturday, July 16.

Bell is the first African-American lesbian to serve in a U.S. state legislature and recently won re-election to her seat in the Georgia state House of Representatives.

LGBT leaders to attend White House reception honoring Pride Month

WASHINGTON – More than 150 gay civil rights leaders from across the U.S. will be attending the official White House LGBT Pride Reception today in the East Room.

President Barack Obama will address the crowd, which will include Craig Roberts of San Diego, who currently is head of the National Stonewall Democrats.

Also at the reception will be Ashley Davalos, representing GLSEN San Diego, according to Colin Pearce.
