9 former employees sue Micky's in West Hollywood

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Ahead of an October trial, the lawyer for nine former Micky’s employees has gone public about a lawsuit filed against the West Hollywood gay bar in July 2011.

The plaintiffs are charging the popular nightclub, known for its male strippers and go-go dancers, with civil rights violations, which include lewd conduct, creating a sexually hostile work environment, racial discrimination and discrimination against heterosexual employees, and labor code violations.

West Hollywood hosts Harvey Milk Day photo project

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- In anticipation of the fourth annual Harvey Milk Day, the City of West Hollywood is hosting a Community Photo Project to create a series of photos featuring residents and visitors with signs featuring quotes from Milk’s speeches.

The images from the photo sessions will be displayed on the City’s Flickr photo sharing site as well as shown on WehoTV on Harvey Milk Day, observed Wednesday, May 22.

ONE Gallery & Museum presents "Joey Terrill" exhibit May 18 to Aug. 25

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives presents a retrospective exhibition of work by Los Angeles-based queer Chicano artist Joey Terrill covering five decades of the artist's work including paintings, drawings and artist publications.

"Joey Terrill" runs from May 18 to Aug. 25 at the ONE Archives Gallery & Museum, 626 N. Robertson Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90069. The opening reception is from 5-8 pm Saturday, May 18.

Plans for West Hollywood "entertainment shuttle" move forward

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - The West Hollywood City Council furthered plans Monday for a weekend entertainment shuttle on Santa Monica Boulevard.

Council members voted 4-0, with Mayor Pro Tempore John D'Amico abstaining, to pay Symblaze Inc. $17,000 to brand and market the pilot program.

The council also opened the bidding process for shuttle service providers with the goal of starting the program in July, according to a city staff report.

Cultural area along Melrose Avenue christened "West Hollywood Design District"

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- The Avenues: Art, Fashion & Design District in West Hollywood announces its new name: West Hollywood Design District.

Geographically distinct, the new name better reflects the district location and design-forward experience to national and international visitors. The change is effective immediately.

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- In response to three deaths from bacterial meningitis in Southern California since December, Impulse, a group of socially active gay men seeking to promote safer sex in the community, will host a Town Hall meeting in West Hollywood on Tuesday, April 23 at 7 pm to discuss the issue.

Move over, West Hollywood - Silver Lake is the true gay mecca

Could gays of the 1980s imagine what it would be like to be gay in 2013? From the Supreme Court pondering marriage equality to NFL players weighing how best to come out, the way we're gay today is nothing like it's ever been before.

And for that modern gay man, West Hollywood may not be the mecca it once was. Instead, young gays are flocking to Silver Lake and other low-key Eastside neighborhoods.

Frank Rodriguez argues as much: "The gay ghetto is dead," he declares to me one morning, gesturing at his phone. "This," he says, "is what's replaced it."

WeHo lesbian bar is closing

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- The Palms Bar, long celebrated as a gathering place for West Hollywood’s lesbian community, will close in the coming months, according to its managers.

The bar, at 8572 Santa Monica Blvd. west of La Cienega, has been in business nearly 50 years. In a Facebook posting, its managers said The Palms is closing “for no other reason than the new property owners have decided to redevelop the property.”

At least two gay men have died of meningitis in L.A. in the past 15 months

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – At least two gay men are among the 13 people who have died of meningitis in Los Angeles County in the past 15 months.

Brett Shaad, 33, of West Hollywood died Saturday night after being removed from life support. The lawyer fell ill on Monday, April 8, and didn’t go to an emergency room until Wednesday, April 10. He was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, an inflammation of the lining around the brain, and lapsed into a coma on Thursday and was later declared brain dead.

Gay man from West Hollywood dies of meningitis

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – A 33-year-old lawyer who contracted bacterial meningitis died at 6:42 pm Saturday after being removed from life support, his family says.

“Tonight our family made the incredibly difficult decision to remove my brother Brett from life support. He died peacefully surrounded by our family and friends,” Brett’s brother, Brian Shaad, said in a statement issued on behalf of the family.
