Three Californians honored as 2013 Harvey Milk Champions of Change

WASHINGTON -- Three Californians are among 10 openly gay LGBT leaders who are being honored today at the White House as 2013 Harvey Milk Champions of Change.

The event is being live streamed at noon PDT on Wednesday, May 22, HERE.

The Californians are:

• Ricardo Lara – California State Senator, Long Beach, Calif.

• John Laird – California Secretary of Natural Resources, Santa Cruz, Calif.

• Michael A. Gin – Mayor of Redondo Beach, Redondo Beach, Calif.

The other winners are:

WASHINGTON -- To honor Harvey Milk's legacy, the White House will recognize a group of outstanding openly LGBT state and local elected and appointed officials as "Harvey Milk Champions of Change."

Active duty Marine officer proposes to partner at White House reception

WASHINGTON -- An active duty U.S. Marine Corps officer proposed to his same-sex partner during the annual Holidays Open House at the White House over the weekend.

Capt. Matthew Phelps, on bended knee, proposed to his partner Ben Schock just outside the entrance to the blue Room Saturday evening. The historic proposal is believed to be the first ever by a same-sex couple at the White House.

Secretary Clinton champions gay rights for State Department, abroad

Secretary of State Hilary Clinton paid tribute to the State Department’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender employees at the 20th anniversary celebration of the Gays and Lesbians in Foreign Affairs Agencies (GLIFAA) organization. The ceremony was held in the State Department’s historic Ben Franklin room for the first time.

After receiving a standing ovation Clinton thanked the crowd for what she called their courageous actions in the face of historic discrimination. The secretary lamented that homosexuals could not serve openly in the State Department until 1992.

"For & Against" episode to tackle campaign finance reform

NEW YORK — “For & Against” will look at campaign finance reform in an episode debuting on Friday, Sept. 21, on Here TV.

In this latest episode, host Jim Morrison talks to former Louisiana Governor and presidential candidate Buddy Roemer and The Advocate magazine’s New York correspondent Julie Bolcer about campaign finance reform and how big money has influenced the upcoming elections.

Smooth transition, unfinished business mark first anniversary of "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" repeal

WASHINGTON — Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) and OutServe, the association of actively serving LGBT military personnel, on Thursday applauded and celebrated the one-year anniversary of repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” praising the smooth transition the military has made in allowing gay, lesbian, and bisexual Americans to serve openly in the military, and called on the White House, Pentagon, and Congress to embrace and advance the final work necessary to achieve full LGBT equality in the Armed Forces.

First the White House, then the Jefferson Memorial and finally they came to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial for the first time. MAP: San Diego-based military group seeks your vote in White House LGBT Pride Month video challenge

SAN DIEGO – The Military Acceptance Project (MAP), based in San Diego, is one of six finalists in the White House LGBT Pride Month “Champion of Change Video Challenge.”

The challenge is designed to “explore the stories of unsung heroes and local leaders who are making an impact in their communities. A group of finalists will be featured as Champions of Change at an event at the White House in July,” according to the White House Office of Public Engagement.
