Internal Boy Scouts documents reveal anti-gay policy is "a key factor" driving decline in Scouting

Internal polling documents obtained exclusively by Scouts for Equality (SFE) demonstrate that the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) policy of banning gay Scouts and scoutmasters is a key driver in the Scouts’ decades-long decline.

SFE's release of these documents comes on the heels of news that the BSA was conducting a comprehensive poll of its membership on the prospect of changing its policy. In February, the BSA said it will put the ban up to a vote of the 1,400 members of its National Council in May.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — After successively lobbying Intel Corp. to end its corporate contributions to the Boy Scouts of America last month, LGBT rights advocate Zach Wahls has set his sights on United Parcel Service.

Wahls, an Eagle Scout raised by two lesbian moms, noted that in 2010, UPS gave nearly $167,000 to the Boy Scouts of America, despite the organization’s policy banning gay Scouts and leaders from participating.

The Boy Scouts of America has lost its largest corporate donor, Intel, which announced Friday that it will no longer support the group until it vows to stop discriminating against gay people.

Zach Wahls to speak in San Diego this weekend

SAN DIEGO -- Zach Wahls, the man whose impassioned three-minute speech on marriage equality to the Iowa legislature, which became viral on YouTube with over 17 million views, will be in San Diego on Sunday, Sept. 23, for a book signing and community discussion.

Wahls will discuss his book "My Two Moms" at the event, which is being hosted by the Advancing Compassion Project and Scouts for Equality.
He will address the anti-LGBT policies of the Boy Scouts of America.

Six Eagle Scouts return medals in protest of Boy Scouts’ anti-gay policy

At least six Eagle Scouts from across the country have returned their Eagle Scout medal to the Boy Scouts of America in response to the organization’s refusal to reverse its long-standing policy against gay scouts and gay and lesbian scout leaders.

Rob Breymaier, an Oak Park, Ill., resident, and Dr. Mark Varnum, from Bangor, Maine, are the latest Eagle Scouts to return their medals in protest of the BSA anti-gay policy.

Breymaier said he has lost hope that the 102-year-old organization would “do the right thing.”

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Eagle Scout and outspoken equality advocate Zach Wahls today delivered more than 275,000 signatures to the Boy Scouts of America calling on the group to end its long history of anti-gay discrimination and reinstate Ohio mom Jennifer Tyrrell, who in April was forcibly removed as den leader of her son's Boy Scouts troop because she's gay.
